Just to follow up on my Rielly post. I know it came out of left field, but there are some things that it has going for it.
1. Kyle Dubas knows the player, the player knows Kyle Dubas
2. The Penguins have a need for left shot d-man. Now is he more of what they got in Karlsson and Letang? Yes, but he is a bit younger
3. Pittsburgh seems to be trying to pull out all the stops for a Crosby cup run.
4. Pittsburgh has 4 second round picks over the next two years.
The deal I proposed broke down to a first and 2 seconds for Rielly. It's kind of in line with what Dubas paid for McCabe at the deadline a couple of years ago. While I know we are all on Rielly's case here, and with good reason, he still has value as a legitimate top 4 dman in the league, who shows up in the playoffs. Only sticking point would be if Rielly waved.
Also, I know that Leaf fans have been accused of being delusional in the past about trade offers. However, I think the Leafs have to set the bar high on their asks for any player they are moving. They need to do to other teams what other teams have done to them. Minten and a first for Carlo is a really bad trade in hindsight. We need to get that kind of value from some team in the league. McMann should bring in a haul. OEL should bring in a haul. Because they are good players, on great contracts that can help a team win in the playoffs. That is exactly the rhetoric used to drive the price up on Laughton and Carlo.
