John Tavares is still a Maple Leaf [4 years, $4.38mil AAV]

With this done, if you assume Knies get $8mil (between Johnston and Peterka) and Jarnkrok and Kampf get moved once their bonuses are dealt the team looks somewhat sorta like (obviously lines can change): Knies-Matthews-Domi McMann-_____-Nylander Laughton-Tavares-_____ _____-_____-_____...

John Tavares is still a Maple Leaf [4 years, $4.38mil AAV]

Also this was probably a coincidence but insane props to the Leafs for announcing this minutes before the NHL/NHLPA press conference on the new CBA deal. Way to steal the spotlight.

Under $5mil is great. Was worried about this deal but no complaints here.

    2025-26 General Trades & Signings

Not that I expect him to sign for something like this but it's crazy that this contract makes more sense for Tavares to sign for here than it does for Edmonton to sign Frederic to.

Still 5 days before free agency opens, which is a lot of time for this stuff. I'd be pretty shocked if Tavares isn't signed before then. And if he isn't then honestly he's probably not coming back, which closes one question mark but obviously opens another.

    2025-26 General Trades & Signings

Which comes from a guaranteed 50% cut of HRR that neither side would be foolish enough to try to tinker with right now. That doesn't mean they should be rolling over for anything else the owners want.

    2025-26 General Trades & Signings

I'm pretty surprised how much the players are giving up in this CBA. Lower contract terms, no more deferrals, extended rights on prospects, more regular season games and limits on signing bonuses are all pretty big wins for the owners. Players got... a more relaxed dress code.

Well there goes the last advantage big market teams had.

    2025-26 General Trades & Signings

You always gotta be a little skeptical of offensive numbers for players on a team where defence is optional. That's my biggest red flag with Peterka right now. Entirely possible he keeps putting up points but it wouldn't be the first time a guys numbers were inflated just by playing big minutes...

I don't think there's a GM in the league who would take Peterka over Knies though. This is still a laughable return for the guy but something about Peterka feels a little suspect.

This is a big reason why I've done a bit of a 180 on Lorentz after these playoffs. Dude's just too nice.

2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

6 is the minimum, but some teams do as much as 8 still.

    2025-26 General Trades & Signings

This is the kind of trade I would have made in mid/late July if other options didn't work out and we had cap space to burn. I do think Kane will be very motivated to prove people wrong in what is very conveniently a contract season too and can see him putting up some solid numbers (certainly...

    2025 Offseason Thread: Spring Cleaning

Fair enough. My pre-free agency period hopes are to be at least a 100 point team (but probably not much higher) but also to significantly improve the teams 5-on-5 play. Being 29th in the league, ahead of only Anaheim, San Jose, and Chicago, in CF% was pretty embarrassing. There's ways we can be...

    2024-25 NHL Thread

Man I'm kind of shocked he made it in over Carey Price, especially after all these years of snubs to what I'd consider lesser selections. Good for him though. Long overdue.

    2025 Offseason Thread: Spring Cleaning

I think this feels a little extreme. This isn't like when Columbus lost Panarin for nothing. If there's a team anywhere that can afford to lose an elite talent for nothing (which again I do stress sucks) it's one that still has 2 other elite talents already on the team. This is probably a...

    2025 Offseason Thread: Spring Cleaning

I liked this take on what should be a prime focus on the offseason, and while yes it sucks to see Marner walk for nothing there is something to be excited about when it comes to actually being able to afford having Lawson Crouse-type players on the team instead of a bunch of $10mil+ forwards and...

    2025 Offseason Thread: Spring Cleaning

If Seravelli is saying something like this without being certain that's a pretty bad look for him. If this is in any way true the Leafs should probably be asking the league if they even care a little bit about tampering or not.

I'd love to get Crouse. We've talked a lot of Hyman here of course today and I think he'd basically be a solid poor man's version of Zach. Can easily flip between being a big part of checking unit with Laughton to jumping into the top-6 as a 3-time 20 goal scorer. I didn't quite realize how down...
