2013 Draft Lottery

Knobby

New member
I wonder what the league will do for the 2013 draft, if the season is cancelled. I am curious if the teams that were in the lottery last year would be in one again, with no favoured odds and then the remaining 25 teams would have a wieghted (not sure what the proper word is) lottery, based upon the previous years standings. I would hate to see teams like LA, Pittsburg, Philidephia etc., end up with the 1st overall. What are yor thoughts on the subject?

If the entire season is cancelled, which I don't think will happen, I'm sure it will be much like the "Crosby sweepstakes" in which every team had a chance at selecting number 1.

Yeah the precedent was set that year that every team would be treated as having an equal record.  It always struck me as a little convient that Pittsburgh won that year.  The team was in dire straits financially and was rumoured to be on the move even before Basille got involved.  The arrival of Crosby saved the team.  I have no evidence it was rigged, but as I said it was a little convient.

Every team wasn't treated as equal for that draft.  They assigned a number of lottery balls based on playoff performances/appearances the previous 3 seasons.  Based on the fact that Pittsburgh was a horrible team at the time, they had more balls than other teams.

Three balls
Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins

Two balls
Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Atlanta Thrashers, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Phoenix Coyotes

One ball
Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals

How did that work exactly, as they went in reverse order?  Or did they go in the proper order, but just showed the results in reverse order?

Can't remember, I don't think I actually watched it, just remembered about the "weight" system of balls and googled it to look up who had how many balls.

I hear what you're saying though, they must have done it in correct order, since once they pick Pittsburgh, they'd have to remove their other 2 balls from the pool, and go on with #2, #3 etc each time removing the balls of the teams that came up.  So they would have figured out the order beforehand and then just announced them in reverse order to build up the drama.

The other big thing to remember about that was that you could end up anywhere in the draft, too - no protection like the top 5 picks have usually.

I assume so, given how that's pretty much how they do the lottery these days.

Yes.. 1st ball out would have been the team drafting 1st overall.  2nd ball out 2nd overall, etc etc.

Then after the fact, present it for television purposes in reverse order.

I think that they should give every team that hasn't made the playoffs since the last lockout 5000000 balls and everyone else one.

Yet somehow, knowing our luck, the Leafs would still end up not winning it. #sadtrombone #boohoo #fixedlottery #kony2012

Yeah. I don't want to be a millionaire by winning 6/49. I want to work for it. ;)

If they were to use the same format as last time, I remember reading the Leafs would get a 6% chance of receiving the #1 pick.
