2013 NHL Draft Thread

Thought I would get this rolling since the discussion started a little bit in other threads.

Other than Seth Jones likely stealing the show, this is the year of the centre... many options up the middle which of course for the Leafs is a good thing.

Some resources:

ISS rankings: http://www.isshockey.com/iss-top-30-released-for-january/

TSN: http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/
TSN: McKenzie is presenting his updated rankings tomorrow.
TSN: Craig Button's list: http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=49649 (usually has some wacko picks.. hence the reason he's in the media now)

MyNHLDraft: Not the most thorough of resources but not a bad quick reference: http://www.mynhldraft.com/NHL-Mock-Draft/

Names I am watching (other than the obvious McKinnon & Jones):

Sean Monahan - somewhat quietly sneaking up on the top of the pack as a well rounded, well sized centre.. the kind you might just be able to call a legit #1 at some point.  Brampton kid too.  Also now in his 3rd OHL year which means he's got more experience than most, and could be NHL ready sooner.  This will get you excited about him: http://hockey.dobbersports.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4006:2013-draft-sean..

Alexander Barkov - Has it all, except speed. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=642004

more later....

I saw that mock draft with the Leafs taking Max Domi.

Now no offense to this kid, i'm sure he's got more talent than his dad, but something just wouldn't sit right with me if the Leafs draft Domi.  Too many bad memories there.

Alexander Barkov - Has it all, except speed. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=642004
Jason Allison?

No not quite Jason Allison. :)

Domi... I wouldn't put any stock into the mock. I just use their site as very quick reference when looking for potential names.  Domi in Toronto again... yeeeeaaaaah I'm gonna have to agree with you there.  no thanks.  Tie would think he has an open invitation to the dressing room if it happened.

He has high-end offensive potential. My only real concern with him is that his size will likely lead to him ending up on the wing if he's a 1st line type. That being said, if the Leafs do end up drafting around 10th, he'd quite possibly be the best offensive talent left on the board.

I'm only really basing this on the WJC but I was a big fan of Drouin and the way he played.

Yeah of the guys listed in the top 30 on one of those links, Domi is the shortest.  Takes after his dad...

Realistically are all/most/any of these C prospects likely to be top-line, bona fide #1 star centres?

Any? Yes.
Some? Maybe.
All? No, silly.

Yeah I wasn't actually suggesting all of them might be, that was more just set up to hear who you think actually would be out of all of those.

So if you could go ahead and try to remember to do that from now on, that'd be great.

A few of them look like they could be. If the Leafs are going to draft one any time soon, this might be the best year for it. MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov, Monahan and a couple others have that kind of potential.

OKIE!

I haven't done enough research on them yet to comment in a lot of detail  (I usually start digging around now, after the WJC's) but obviously McKinnon will be one and at a level I think around or a notch below John Tavares, IMO.  I don't think he's the next Stamkos or Crosby level guy.

Drouin looks real good but may end up a permanent winger.. he's like a Jordan Eberle in my books. Barkov is likely that level, although what he commented on his own skating raises the eyebrows a bit. Monahan has a well rounded game going on.. not sure if it's high end enough to be a 1st liner or not.

Hmm...2013 NHL entry draft not seen as having as much depth as last year's...

http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/49838-2013-NHL-draft-lacks-depth-of-talent.html

The 2013 draft is not as strong or as deep as we first thought,? said one scout, echoing the thoughts of many others. ?It?s a deep top 10 and an OK first round, but I don?t see a lot of depth. Is it deeper than 2012? I?m not so sure.?

The 2012 draft was considered the weakest in several years. That?s perhaps why 2013 was so anticipated, because of the heavy hitters like Jones and MacKinnon at the top of the list. It wasn?t that long ago some scouts and media outlets were selling the 2013 draft as the best since 2003, when the star-struck likes of Jeff Carter, Dustin Brown, Brent Seabrook, Zach Parise, Ryan Getzlaf, Brent Burns, Ryan Kesler, Mike Richards, Corey Perry, Loui Eriksson, Patrice Bergeron and Shea Weber all were taken in the No. 11-49 window.

?The 2013 draft won?t come close to 2003,? another scout said. ?Let?s make that clear right now. Take away the first eight or 10 picks and you?re looking at guys who can contribute on the third and fourth lines, not the first line.?

?It looks like there?s a demarcation between the first three (MacKinnon, Jones and Drouin) and the next five or six,? a scout said.

Another scout asked the media to practise caution when singing the praises of MacKinnon, the odds-on favourite to go first overall. ?He should never be compared to Sidney Crosby (even though they both hail from the Cole Harbour region of Nova Scotia). One guy is a superstar, the other is a projected star. I?ve always felt the media is placing too high of expectations on Nathan.?

The first part I'm not surprised by, as there usually seems to be a drop-off after the first 10 or so guys. The quote that stood out to me was:

?It looks like there?s a demarcation between the first three (MacKinnon, Jones and Drouin) and the next five or six,? a scout said.

I haven't followed the draft or last year's draft for that matter closely at all, but I thought a few other guys were still in the mix.
