2013 NHL Draft

Looking ahead to the draft, the Leafs have a couple of conditional 2013 draft picks that were part of previous trades. The first is a conditional 4th from Anaheim to complete the Beauchemin trade and the second is a conditional 4th going to Nashville to complete the Franson trade. What were the parameters of the trades and where have the picks ended up?

1. Colorado Avalanche            11. Philadelphia Flyers            21.
2. Florida Panthers            12. Phoenix Coyotes            22.
3. Tampa Bay Lightning            13. Winnipeg Jets            23.
4. Nashville Predators            14. Columbus BlueJackets            21.
5. Carolina Hurricanes            15. New York Islanders            25.
6. Calgary Flames            16. Minnesota Wild*            26.
7. Edmonton Oilers            17. New York Rangers            27.
8. Buffalo Sabres            18.             28.
9. New Jersey Devils            19.             29.
10. Dallas Stars            20.             30.

This is what is locked in for the 2013 draft order.

IF Detroit, Ottawa, San Jose and the NY Rangers were to win their series, the Leafs would draft 17th.  Reality is more likely that all four will wind up losing their series and the Leafs will draft 21st overall based on regular season standings.

For the Nashville trade, the pick was conditional on Lombardi playing 60 games over the course of the next two seasons. He hit that target, so Toronto's 4th rounder in 2012 will go to Nashville.

The Beauchemin one is a little tricky but this is what Pierre LeBrun tweeted at the time of the trade:

"Explaining the parameters of the conditional 4th-round pick in trade: If Lupul is not on the Toronto?s "reserve list" for 40 or more regular season games in the 2012-13 season then Anaheim trades its 6th round pick in 2013 instead of 4th round pick in 2013."

A reserve list is essentially all the players a team has rights to. The Leafs had Lupul's rights for 40 or more regular season games in the 2012-2013 season, so the Leafs will receive Anaheim's 4th round draft pick instead of their 6th round pick.

The tricky part is that some posters don't agree with LeBrun's explanation since it doesn't make sense that the Ducks would give up less in this case. But LeBrun even confirmed his explanation on twitter a few times because people kept questioning him about it.

This trade makes it pretty clear that the Leafs had to take Lupul on as a salary dump in this trade, and Burke set that parameter up because he was hoping to be able to move this salary dump elsewhere within a season. If he was "stuck" with Lupul's contract then Anaheim would give up the higher draft pick. Obviously, Lupul turned out much better than either side was expecting.

According to Katie Flynn, the Leafs do indeed receive a 6th Rounder from Anaheim as part of the Lupul trade and not a 4th Rounder as previously discussed on this site which was my understanding also.

Just curious, who is Katie Flynn? A reporter for the Star tweeted last month that the Leafs told him the pick would be in the 4th round.

She's a contributor at The Hockey Writers, which, as far as I can tell, is a blog with no real connections to anyone in the front office. I imagine she's just going with the more logical interpretation, without actually verifying it with anyone.

Yes about all Katie Flynn has going for her is that she provided her first and last name.
