2013 Rookie Tournament

The Leafs announced their rookie tournament roster this afternoon. You can find a list of players and other information about the tournament here:

http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=680743

12 of the 25 players on the roster could potentially be playing for the Marlies this season. The last time this event took place (2011), there were 7 players who took part that played games with the Marlies the following season. And only two of them played more than 23 games with the team.

Found out some details on this myself:

The games will air on LeafsTV after each game has ended (@10pm), and will not be aired live on LeafsTV.

Rogers Local may air the games live, however so far they are stating TBA.

RogersTV Toronto seems to have them on their schedule:

I never understood why LeafsTV couldn't broadcast these live. They've always just aired a tape-delayed version of the Rogers broadcast.

I never understood that either...

Rogers paid for the rights. LeafsTV are too cheap to make a competitive bid.

I suppose that made sense for the previous years...

My guess is there's some sort of long-term agreement in place there rather than a year to year thing, in which case, even if MLSE wanted LeafsTV to air the tourney, they wouldn't be able to.

Either way it's pretty upsetting for those of us that don't get Rogers but pay for LeafsTV.

I'm sure that's what it is I'm just surprised it's apparently something they can't break or renegotiate.

It's probably not worth the time/money for them to do so. The rookie tournament is niche event, so, advertising revenue would be pretty low. On top of that, they'd have to pay their own staff to run the equipment, do the play by play, etc. Farming it out to the local affiliate saves them that expense and brings in some coin for the broadcast rights (though, likely, not all that much). Breaking the contract or re-negotiating it means bringing in lawyers and paying for that expense, as well, and, really, just doesn't seem like it's worth their time from a dollars and cents POV.

Paul Hendrick posted some of the lines at practice for the Leafs squad:

Broll-McKegg-Brown
Ross-Verhaeghe-Leivo
Devane-Crescenzi-Biggs
Rupert-Carrick-Rupert

Rielly-Finn
Percy-Granberg

He didn't make any mention of Herzog and Gauthier. But with 14 forwards I suppose they'll be the odd men out for the first game. I'd imagine MacWilliam was skating with one of the 3 invited defencemen and he'll be playing.

First game tonight vs the Hawks.

Predictions?

Who are we most excited to see?

Expect anyone to dominate?

Lastly, think there will be streams for it since it's on live tv?

check the Leafs official site, they might have a free link there, if so, hopefully for everyone and not just Leafs region viewers.

Nothing there. Anyone have a link? Would love to sit down and have a few beers and watch some live hockey again. :)

Apparently it's on RogersTV tonight live, with a rebroadcast on LeafsTV later tonight:

I really hope Leivo can translate his success in Jr's to a pro career. He has the tools but sometimes he misplaces his tool box.
