The Women's Ice Hockey event got underway on Saturday:

Team Sweden squeaked by Team Japan 2-1.

Meanwhile, Team Switzerland whitewashed Team (South) Korea (featuring several North Korean players) 8-0.  Team Korea made history in it's first-ever hockey opener.

The "unified' Team Korea,  (featuring twelve players from the North alongside their South Korean brethren),  was greeted with a thunderous reception by the crowd of specators in the Kwandong Hockey Centre.  In attendance were some North & South Korean officials as well as IOC President Thomas Bach, and Kim Yo Jong, sister of N.Korean strongman Kim Jong Un.

Sunday's results:

Team Canada led by both Rebecca Johnston's & M?lodie Daoust's two goals, plus three assists by Marie-Philip Poulin, shutout Team OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia) 5-0.  Canada was backstopped by Anne-R?nee Desbiens who faced just eighteen shots, while the OAR's Nadazhda Morozova faced forty-eight

In fact, Morozova kept Canada off the scoreboard in the first period, even though the Canadians had a 15-5 edge in shots.  It didn't take long after the start of the second period before Canada began scoring.

Elsewhere, Team USA defeated Team Finland 3-1 in a chippy affair.  The Finns took the lead 1-0 in the first period, but the Americans came back in the second period, with Kendal Coyne scoring the go-ahead goal on an assist by Hillary Knight.\\

USA net minder Maddie Rooney faced 23 shots while Noori Raty faced 39.  The US outshot Finland 42-24.

Monday results:

Team Switzerland backed by the goaltending of Florence Schilling, held off Team Japan 3-1.  The Japanese tried to come back to narrow the deficit in the third period, outshooting the Swiss 20-4, but alas, Schilling was just too much to overcome.  Sarah Benz had a two-goal game for Switzerland.

With the win, Schilling ties Canada's Kim St.Pierre for most wins by a goaltender with eight.  Team Russia's Irina Gashennikova & Team Finland Noori Raty trail with seven.

Schilling made 37 saves and is also tied with Canada's St. Pierre with four shutouts.  She also holds the record for most games played in Women's Olympic hockey with 16.

Team Sweden shutout Team (South) Korea 8-0.  It was the second straight game that the Koreans have been shutout by an identical score.  Too bad, but at least they're a part of hockey history.

Team Switzerland edged out Team Sweden 2-1, with the winning goal scored in the third period on a tip-in by Switzerland's Phoebe Staenz.  Though the Swedes tried to tie the game with a few minutes remaining in regulation time, they were stymied by their own undisciplined play.

Swedish goalkeeper Sara Grahn faced 47 shots and deserves credit for keeping her squad in the game.  On the other side of the rink, Swiss netminder Florence Schilling faced 31 shots and set a record for her ninth win, surpassing Canada's Kim St. Pierre as the winningest goalkeeper.

Wednesday (Feb. 14) results:

Team Japan defeated Team (South) Korea 4-1.  It was the Japanese's  first win in this preliminary round,  even though they were eliminated from gaining a berth in the upcoming Quarter-finals after their earlier loss to Switzerland.

For the Japanese, this was their historic first-ever win in Olympic hockey.
For the Koreans, well, at least they had their cheerleaders providing the cheering.  Seriously though, this game was more than just about hockey between these two countries, it also carried a political tone:

More results for Wednesday Feb.14:

With a packed crowd at the Kwandong Hockey Centre looking on, Team Canada staved off a furious American offensive muster with the extra attacker, and prevailed 2-1 pver Team USA.

Canada took the lead on goals by Meghan Acosta and Sarah Nurse (the game-winner), in the first period which could more likely be termed a shooting match.  Then in the opening minutes of the third period, USA's Kendall Coyne scored to put her team on the scoreboard.

Both goaltenders -- Canada's Genevieve Lacasse and USA's Maddie Rooney -- were instrumental in preventing the scoring from running higher.  Lacasse in particular, who not only faced 45 shots on goal but foiled the US on a penalty shot in the second period, with Canada up 2-0.

The Canadians' Haley Irwinwas denied a goal in the third period as the video review officials deemed it a kick-in from the skate in front of the American net.

With less than two minutes remaining in third period the US had empty net in favour of an extra attacker, and if not for some histrionics from Canadian 'keeper Lacasse (including the crossbar/post), the US nearly came close to tying it.  In fact, the puck was buried under Lacasse who was pushed and slid in the net, but the game was over by then with the horn having sounded a few seconds earlier.

Whew. Good job, Canada.  Now the Canadians await the winner of the Quarter-final matchup  which will determine who they'll pair up against for the Semi-final.  Canada finished atop in her group and this win was a record twenty-third consecutive Olympic victory.  Some celebration alright, ladies!

Results for Thursday Feb. 15:

Team Finland outpaced Team OAR ( Olympic Athletes from Russia 5-1.

This was the last game of the Preliminary Round.  Quarter-Finals will begin starting Friday.

Quarter-final results for Friday Feb.16:

Team OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia soundly beat Team Switzerland 6-2 to advance to the Semi-Final against Canada.

Switzerland, well, make that Swiss 'keeper Florence Schelling, just couldn't keep Team OAR's Anna Sokhina off the scoresheet.  The Russian forward made good on her chances by contributing two goals and added two assists in advancing her squad against a Swiss team that played rather uninspired.

Many were expecting the Swiss to advance considering that they were Bronze medallists in the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games and with Schelling in net, would repeat.  Second tie was obviously not the charm.  Too bad.

Switzerland now plays in the Relegation Round (Placement game) against Team Japan.
