Season isn't even over yet (or is it?)
In addition to Holl, Marincin, and Engvall re-signing early last season, Teemu Kivihalme seems to like it here even though he can no longer officially practice in the off-season. Yet another two year deal spanning a raise in league minimum salaries, so we get Kivihalme at a cap hit that is less than 2021-22?s min when the Leafs have to sort out what happens with Andersen and Hyman and the Seattle draft.

Don't blame him one bit for wanting to take an opportunity like that considering how much of a question mark the 20/21 AHL season is right now. He does still have one more year on his contract with the Leafs though so presumably they would need to approve this/loan him to that KHL team.

Korshkov, now out of the RTP running, will be playing in the KHL until the next NHL season kicks back into gear, preventing him from too long a layoff.

https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/toronto-maple-leafs-prospects/2020/7/26/21339116/report-from-russia-maple-leafs-yegor-korshkov-to-return-to-khl-one-season-lokomotiv-rumour-contract
sports24_ru quote indicates it is a loan from the NHL.

Korshkov, who turned 24 a few weeks ago, is in the first year of his ELC by the NHL calendar. If he goes to Russia right now, he immediately steps into next year. That ELC is only two-years, since he was 22 when it was signed. So if he does play the 2020-2021 season for Lokomotiv, he will finish up an RFA with arbitration rights. He?ll also be, somewhat unusually, waivers exempt.

If he and the Leafs are then interested in him playing in the 2021-2022 season in the NHL, when he?ll be 25, they will be able to sign him to a deal that doesn?t need to meet the ELC minimum (which will still be $925,000) like they would with a 25-year-old Russian UFA. The NHL minimum salary in that year will be $750,000.

This looks like a good idea for both parties. Korshkov gets to play top-6 minutes, make money, and then yo-yo back to the NHL for the Leafs to replace the future-Kraken Pierre Engvall on a cheaper deal, possibly with a fellow teammate from Lokomotiv in tow.

Gonna see more of these. Barabanov and Abramov and Der Arguchintsev should probably make a similar move until the NHL kicks in again. Lindgren and Kivihalme also have the option to play in the Sweden/Finland.

3. When Leafs depth forward Egor Korshkov, a Phase 3 participant, failed to make the club?s bubble roster, it was soon reported he?d agreed to return to the KHL?s Yaroslavl Lokomotiv, with whom he spent five seasons before joining the Toronto Marlies? 2019 playoff run.

That doesn?t necessarily mean Korshkov won?t be back in Canada sometime in 2021.

The pandemic has thrown all leagues? schedules out of whack, so Dubas will treat each prospect on an individual basis, working out agreements that best serve development instead of going with a cookie-cutter policy for everyone in the system.

?Due to the circumstances that are impacting the world everywhere, we have to be a little bit more agile in our thinking in terms of what we want with our prospects,? Dubas explains. ?None of these things are official yet, but some of these players have had relationships in Europe and they played in different places in Europe.

?If those places are safe and they?ve done a great job versus the virus and their seasons are going to start, it?s a great opportunity for us to see those players begin to get some game action.?

When NHL camps reopen in mid-November (virus willing), Toronto could bring a prospect back into the fold or decide to leave him for a full season to develop overseas.

?Those seasons should be wrapping up when we?re about halfway through our [2020-21] NHL season, and then [we could] bring them over,? Dubas says.

I'll assume that other teams are going to do the same with their prospects if the AHL can't get up and running before 2021...there'll be some very loaded up European leagues.

How do teams practice or have game day skates with only 2 rinks and constant games?

There are practice rinks in the bubble. Coca-Cola Coliseum and the Ford Performance Centre (multiple pads) for Toronto.

I guess year-end presser with Dubas/Shanahan will be tomorrow after they find out if they win the draft lottery tonight?

I luv ya Bear-Man!  You're on top of everything.  :-*

I think there probably are some questions to be asked (was the all star line the way to go or did it have an adverse affect on depth production etc), but I like this from Torts

Nice of Torts to step up. Keefe is a good coach. Just need a few more key pieces and a full training camp.  Goodbye to Ceci and Barrie.  Good luck.

People need to relax. This team was tumbling off the cliff before Keefe took over. They will be better but it takes time. Dubas will address the D next.

I don't think it's quite that simple. A flat cap clearly wasn't accounted for in the plan, and after the Keefe honeymoon period was over, the team went back to pretty average wildcard spot hockey. There's virtually no room to improve the defence substantially, and I don't think too many teams are going to be throwing life preservers. There's key parts of the roster that have expiring contracts at the end of next year, and not all of them can be filled by replacement cap-minimum players.

Oh it won't be easy but they can improve the D but it may cost them a top 6 player. It's ok to deal from strength tho. As for expiring contracts, Freddie is really the only one after next season that could be tough to replace. They've gotten good value for Freddie so far. I know Hyman is up but he may have to be sacrificed or they trade a Kappy/Johnnson/Kerfoot salary to pay him. Like Bobby Mac says, you can work around the cap if you want.  You just can't keep everyone.

Leafs get the spotlight on this one
If the Maple Leafs believe this group needs a change, do they also believe their style needs a change? There are whispers Dubas considered some things around the trade deadline that, as one executive said, fans and media ?wouldn?t have expected? from him. One of those was Kyle Clifford, who he knows well. But I think there were more.

I can?t see him entirely changing his belief that Toronto should play a certain way, but I can see him modifying it. Someone else with some bite is coming, and I?d guess it?s on the blue line.
