RW Alexander Steeves, Dubuque Fighting Saints (Ranked No. 200): Steeves is a two-way power forward with very good speed and a deadly shot who has played on Dubuque?s top line for most of the season. The Notre Dame commit is used on the top unit of the Fighting Saints? power play and penalty kill, and he is a threat to score in either situation. Steeves? shot is very heavy and creates a lot of rebounds, but he?s quick enough to drop the shoulder and skate past matador defenders to increase the quality of his scoring chance. He can play a physical, tenacious style and knows what to do to turn a harmless dump-into a lengthy possession or a clean look on goal.

Another prospect in the pipeline of Zach Hyman clones but with hands

I?m looking forward to trading him for Lee Stevniaks in a few seasons because he isn?t leading the league in scoring

Not that this means everything, but he wasn't listed as one of the top-15 NCAA free agents in Corey Pronman's list of them.

He is a Barb Underhill project. If he signs an ATO now, he can get a headstart before his contract kicks in.

Really pondering how amusing it is for opponents to be facing a chrome-domed squad

Looks like he's a bit of a runner when he skates. Tough to fix but not impossible.

I'm always for these low risk pickups. Worst case scenario, he's ECHL/AHL depth for a few years. Worth the gamble.

He slots into the Nick Robertson prospect template the way Sandin slots into the Dermott template.

Pluses:
- Well above average hockey sense, especially on offense, 1v1
- Shot: head up, hard, accurate, deceptive (remind you of anyone?)
- Puck handling: utilizes speed changes in skating and in puck movement to find space
- internally motivated to improve/excel; big hockey nerd

Minuses:
- Lack of top end speed, especially for slightly below average sized hockey player
- Tries to do too much sometimes, but without the Mitch Marner level toolset to recover the puck and do it again more often than not

I think Semyon Der Arguchintzev is going to like centering a line with Steeves on the wing.

Found this article...kid looks promising. I've read many scouts ranked him low because of his skating. Barb can help him here.

2021 NCAA All-Free Agent Team..
Alex Steeves, Notre Dame (Jr.) ? A player whose NHL market is well-documented, Steeves leads the way among undrafted free agents. Steeves sits tied for sixth overall in NCAA scoring with 31 points in 28 games, while his 15 goals ties for fourth overall. A skilled forward who makes the players around him better, Steeves is ready for the pro game, even as a junior. Assuming he forgoes his remaining NCAA eligibility, Steeves could sign soon. The Fighting Irish were knocked out of the Big Ten Tournament on Sunday, an early exit for a team that needed a deep run to feel secure about a national tournament spot. That loss could very well mean that Steeves? college season is over and his pro career is ready to begin.
