An Open Letter to Mitch Marner

I know I am going to get roasted on this post..fire away 8)

An Open letter to Mitch Marner. (not to Paul or Mr. Ferris)

Dearest Mitch,

First off, no one blames you for wanting the very best deal you can get with the Leafs, it is only rational to do so.  That is why I am writing directly to you and not your Dad or Mr. Ferris.

I am writing to you, a Leaf fan, from a Leaf fan.  You grew up in a room decorated with Blue and White, sleeping in Maple Leaf bedsheets from the time you were a little kid.

You were a complete Leaf fanatic; I believe you still are.  Since you put on skates it was your dream to win a Stanley Cup with your beloved Leafs.  I would bet my life on that statement.
Mitch you have a dream situation playing in Toronto, you can be near your family (noted how family comes first), play for the Maple Leafs, make more money in a few months than most of us make in a lifetime, which is great.  In Ontario, in specific and Canada in general you?re a household name, the endorsement revenues you will generate over your career and beyond will make you one of the richest people on the planet.

In the great film Chinatown, Jack Nicolson?s character Private Eye Gittes asks Faye Dunway?s very wealthy father played by John Huston. ?Why are you doing it? How much better can you eat? What could you buy that you can't already afford??
The question Mitch is how much better can you eat at 9 Million a year than you can at 11 million a year?  What can?t your purchase if you don?t match Auston?s money?
Is this based on Hubris?  It?s looking that way.

As a fan I think I have a right to at least ask this question, for us fans do pay the way (by the way).  Would 1- 2  million make a difference to your life-long loyalties.  It?s starting to look this way to your fanbase, that is all.
Is two million a year on your Leaf contract going to make up for lost endorsements by going to another market?? Maybe yes, maybe no. This is all up to you Mitch.

To be honest Mitch, you are starting to lose your shining image with what appears to your fanbase as; for lack of a better word; ?Greed?.    You are appearing mercenary to your fanbase, just to let you know.
Perhaps you are living in a bubble surrounded by family or sycophants, who keep telling you to trust your Dad and Mr. Ferris who are minimizing the damage to your image that your hold out is having.

Mitch this is your life, it?s your time to shine.  But when my 26-year-old son said to me yesterday, ?Trade him, I don?t care what we get back?, then he is one voice out of millions.

Do you know that when the CBC, has one letter of complaint, the actually say this has the power of 10,000 voices?  This is true, Mitch, believe it.

You grew up to lead us to the Stanley Cup, you have the teammates, there has never been more talent on this team since 67.
Yes do your best negotiation wise, but you are reaching a tipping point and once you go over it, there is no turning back.  At least without a Cup.

Sincerely
A long-suffering Leaf fan who continues to suffer.

A tipping point to what?

The Rainforest is burning to satisfy the desire for cheap food. Plutocrats are turning once proud democracies into open sewers of graft and corruption. Our desire for cheap consumer goods has effectively made us all supporters of modern day slavery.

But you know what really upsets me? What strikes me as "greed"? A 22 year old kid trying to negotiate a fair deal for himself. Why does what he make affect me at all? Because the cartel his bosses belong to decided to impose a cap on their own spending so that any dollar they pay an employee is coming out of another employee's pocket.

Just imagine the sort of moral perspective you'd need on the world to reconcile the above two paragraphs.

Great post.... The greed in sports is just nuts.  A first big contract for him should be max  8x8.5.  There is a defense to sign next season.  Why force your team to give away a chance to win more then just one cup by not having the cap funds left to pay everyone.

My choice is max 8.5mil per  for 6-8 yrs. Or sit him out.

I am well aware of all the worlds problems Nik, I used to live in the Caribbean for many years and you want to talk about corruption, there it so transparent that even a clown can see it.
I am speaking strictly as a Leaf fan who has the right to ask the question.  I do think that Mitch is on the cusp of tarnishing his relationship with his fan base. I have a feeling a lot of his fans know exactly what I am asking, share similar insights.  That is all, it's simple and in its own compartment.

The Tipping Point can come if Mitch sits at home or goes to Switzerland or gets his rights traded to the Coyotes.  Imagine him coming back to play against Toronto if for some reason the truck goes off the cliff.

Thanks Nutman, I knew I would get roasted by U know who.  You know there always has to be drama in Leafland. We assemble a juggernaut of talent to have one of its most tangible assets in the same frustrating situation we ended up with Nylander last year.  With the Raptors Championship and Bianca's win it would be nice if the T.O. situation was all nice and smooth for a change.
I guess my problem is when the Leafs were winning Bob Baun used to come to our house, my father was a friend of his.  All these guys had summer jobs.  Am I saying that is right, no way but they played and they loved the game. Perhaps the pendulum has swung so far into big business then that is all it is.

Do you think the Leafs are anywhere near even considering trading Marner right now?

I do think that Mitch is on the cusp of tarnishing his relationship with his fan base.

"His" fanbase has proven time and time again that their view of these players is entirely transactional. The second he no longer suits their short term interests they'll turn on him and call him all manner of names for daring to consider his own interests above their own. It happened to Mats Sundin, nobody is immune.

You know who was a local kid who took less money than he could have gotten elsewhere? David Clarkson. Remember how well he was treated? Remember all the breaks the fans cut him? The actions of fans towards players is what teaches players that this is first and foremost a business. A relationship where affection and loyalty are entirely transactional and one-sided can't be tarnished because it's a terrible relationship to begin with. You don't give a crap about Mitch Marner, you'd want the Leafs to trade him tomorrow if it helped the team win a cup. Why should he care about you?

If you want players to feel differently, fans would need to act differently.

Huh. So despite being from here you decided it was in your own best interests to live and work somewhere else.

Man, the choices people make.

Dear Mitch,

Do as you please.  As a Leaf fan, I?ve admired the skill and talent you?ve brought to the ice game after game, and entertaining all of us fans watching you & the team play either in person or broadcast game in, game out.

As I mentioned previously, do as you please, Mitch, and listen to no one but yourself, what?s in your heart, your mind, and decide what is it that truly matters to you, what will make you happy for both in the short term and the long term.

As a fan, I understand your penchant for wanting to be among the league?s premier salaried individuals (considering your contributions to the Toronto Maple Leads hockey club).  That is something no one can argue with nor take away from.  However, when it comes time for money talk, that is something that will be and is debateable by many, including yourself.  It is hoped that these talks will transcend a happy ending for both you and the team, so that your season can begin smoothly and with much anticipation by the faithful.

Once again, Mr. Marner, the ball is in your court, so to speak.  And only in yours.  Not your agent, not a parent, not a friend, not even a fan.  But yours.

What you choose to do with it is merely speculative at this point, and that the true decision-making countdown long began and is winding itself toward the stretch run.  Make a decision, Mitch, and hopefully all will be in your best interests with the thought of pride, integrity, and sensibility to prevail.

From a rejuvenated Leaf fan who has enjoyed watching all of you play with immense enthusiasm.

Dear Mr Marner,

Do whatever the hell you want. Make as much money as you can. Score lots of points. Keep your mouthguard in your mouth, it's disgusting.

Or don't, whatever.

Regards, Bullfrog

Not a snowballs chance in hell!

from an Article in todays PPP titled "Wednesday?s FTB: How Mitch Marner turned himself into a villain"

*grandfather Mitch Marner explaining his career to his young grandchildren*

"and so the trade was how i ended up playing my whole career in the sunbelt and never won anything. but it's important to remember, kids, i now have 88 million dollars instead of 81 million dollars"

Funny how this follows my open letter by one day. Perhaps a lot of others feel exactly like I do. Or my son feels even radical about. How much is enough?
