Game Notes

COL
?Varlamov (11-10-5, 2.82 GAA, .909 Sv%) will likely start for the Avalanche
?Colorado has one of the best lines in hockey right now: Rantanen, MacKinnon, and Landeskog have 68, 66, and 51 points respectively. Rantanen and MacKinnon are 2nd and 5th in league scoring
?The Avs are in quite a rut right now with just 1 win in their last 10 games. They were once comfortably in a playoff spot but they're now fighting to keep their wild card position

TOR
?Andersen (20-9-1, 2.50 GAA, .923 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?Andersen and Sparks were both full participants at practice with the Leafs on Sunday. Sparks says he's received clearance from the medical staff, while Andersen said he feels ready to go. We'll have to wait for a final confirmation tomorrow but I'm guessing we'll see Freddy back in net with Sparks backing up

Injuries

?Molota Zadorov - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
?Vladislav Kamenev - Shoulder - Injured Reserve
?Conor Timmins - Concussion - Injured Reserve
Code:

?Tyler Ennis - Ankle - Injured Reserve
?Garret Sparks - Concussion - Probable Monday
?Frederik Andersen - Groin - Probable Monday

Katya at PPP comes through with some good clarification on where Hutchinson stands and what sort of waiver voodoo we need to commit:

https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2019/1/14/18181293/michael-hutchinson-is-still-on-the-maple-leafs-roster

The answer is none at the moment.

The long and short of the difference between Regular Recall and Emergency Recall with respect to waiver activation:
Regular Recalls have a 30 day or 10 NHL game limit, whichever comes first
Emergency Recalls have a 10 NHL game limit only
and the two counters are separate and do not count against each other

Hutchinson has been on Emergency Recalls with Florida and Toronto, and has played 4+5.
If Andersen and Sparks are activated, then the Emergency is no longer valid and Hutchinson would be converted to Regular Recall, with a fresh 10-game, 30-day counter (the Leafs have roster space with no extra forward).

Yeah, I brought that up in the last GDT when Chris Johnson said his waivers was about to expire. Didn't bother checking if Florida's original call-up was an emergency one too. Very weird that this isn't something Sportsnet/Johnson picked up on. And now other reporters are parroting the same line as he did.

The AHL Transaction logs don't really indicate what type of recall in the raw list, so one would need to cross reference the injury data to see if it was a situation that qualified as Emergency (<2 goalies). Generally, a goalie recall is most likely to be of the emergency variety, right?

True, but the Leafs in particular aren't really shy about clarifying what kind of recalls they're using. As you can plainly see here.

The daily cap tracker on CapFriendly can help here.

https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/mapleleafs/cap-tracker

These links will tell you what each player's daily roster status was for the entire season.

Hutchinson's call up by the Panthers in November was indeed an emergency call up.

Always a good idea to ride your starter hard while he's got a groin problem.

The Leafs really like to shoot for the edges of the net from in close.

How do we know it was Babcock's decision?

If Andersen hid his injury, then sure there wasn't much Babs could have done about it. But I'm assuming players, especially goalies, get checked out on a somewhat regular basis and I can't imagine Andersen not telling anyone he was having some issues.

See, now I can't agree with this.

Babcock is pining for a Cup, and I can't imagine in a million years that when his goalie comes to him with a groin issue in December that Babs is like "play through it kid".
