VAN
?Thatcher Demko (4-11-2, 3.82 GAA, .888 Sv%) will likely start for the Canucks

TOR
?Matt Murray (11-5-2, 2.73 GAA, .911 Sv%) will likely start for the Maple Leafs
?Keefe said that Murray still needs final clearance from the medical staff on Saturday but if that goes well he's expected to start in net for the first time since January 17th
?The Leafs only had an optional practice on Friday so it's unclear right now what line-up changes, if any, we'll see. I think it's fair to expect Gustafsson to come out for either ZAR or Liljegren, but we won't know until the morning skate

As far as I know, no lineup has been announced and the Leafs only held an optional skate yesterday (in which Liljegren participated) so there isn?t any reason to get mad at the coach for anything yet.

If only there was somewhere in the GDT that made this clear specifically to avoid people overreacting about lineup decisions that haven't even been made yet.

The Leafs have 9 defencemen and 20 games left to figure out what the ideal 6-man combination of them will be against Tampa. It'll also be important to make sure guys like Timmins and Gustafsson, who are probably the clear 8-9 in the group, to get in a handful of games because having depth like that is pointless come playoff time if they haven't played hockey in a month and a half.

The only defencemen who should be playing every single game down the stretch (assuming they're healthy) are Rielly, Brodie, and McCabe. Those 3, along with Giordano, are the only locks to be playing in game 1 of the playofs, but Gio should be getting some rest time after a long season where he almost certainly played significantly more minutes than the Leafs expected him at the beginning of the season.

Liljegren WILL sit from time to time over the next 20 games. Schenn will sit. Holl will sit. We really don't need to make a mountain out of a molehill about this on a game by game basis. At least save that for playoffs.

I sense these six have been configured for Tampa:
Rielly-Schenn
McCabe-Brodie
Giordano-Holl

A physical dman in each pairing.

If they lose a physical dman to injury, we might see Benn fill in.

Tampa, they're probably thinking "how do we burn those guys with speed ..?"

As you say, players like Giordano and Schenn should get some rest for the playoffs.
I doubt Timmins is going to see much ice time.

Gustafsson as a 7th or 6th on the PP will be interesting.

They're up on Tampa by 5pts. After Vancouver, their next six are against playoff or contending for a playoff spot teams. So they need these 2 pts tonight. Tampa is close to .700 at home and .500 on the road so home ice might be more meaningful than usual this year.

This is basically what the Leafs ran against Tampa last year. Schenn replaces Lyubushkin, McCabe replaces Muzzin.

The Rielly-Lyubushkin pairing struggled last season, Bush definitely played higher than he should. The Muzzin-Brodie pair was basically rock solid. Giordano started with Liljegren but Lily lost his spot after 2 games and was replaced by Holl who ended up having a pretty good series.

I think the grouping you sense happening has the same issue as last season: Rielly can't carry a #6 defencemen while handling top-4 responsibilities. The way I see it, they need to try McCabe and Brodie on seperate pairings and have each of them be the defensive conscience of their duo. So something more like:

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Holl/Liljegren
Giordano-Holl/Liljegren/Schenn

All good points.

Schenn has done well to revive his career in a league that got faster.
They must feel Rielly needs someone physical like that (like Lyubushkin was last year).
Even though it would just be ES minutes, I have my doubts about Schenn playing there.
The 5-6 pairing is more likely his peak. He is vulnerable to speed.

I worry they're getting so psyched on beating Tampa, that if they do, they'll go "now what?" and sort of fold.

Like you, I think this will work regardless of who plays with Giordano
Giordano-Holl/Liljegren/Schenn

There was some talk of McCabe playing on Rielly's right side. I don't know if that is truly worthy of consideration.
Rielly-McCabe
Brodie-Liljegren (not sure about this pairing either ..)
Giordano-Holl/Schenn

They have 9 plus 2 NHL dmen and I do not feel like we have an embarrassment of riches. It's more like a Rubrics cube where I can't get the colors to line up.
Hopefully, they figure out what is best and it solves the problems they were hoping to.

If there's this much debate about Rielly's partner maybe Rielly should be playing 3rd pair minutes and do his PP thing.

Cree and Punjabi broadcasts.  Don't ever let anyone tell you guys that Canada isn't cool.
