Car Insurance

I've had mine and my family's insurance with State Farm for the last 25 years.  My brother was our agent.  They were good to us - whenever we had a claim, someone was on it right away.  All repairs were good, and we always had their rental car.

But, my brother has retired.  And our insurance is high - but I'm thinking we should hook up with an agent that can shop around for us.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

We were with Intact for years. We recently switched to TD Insurance. It saved us $350 a year on our car and $300 on our house. From all the research I did, it was the cheapest I could find.

Shameless plug - Check an Allstate agent (or find a broker and get a quote for Pembridge Insurance - Allstate owns Pembrige, it's our Broker line).

I saved lots of money when I switched to Allstate (2 cars + house insurance).

Good luck!

Have you used this company? Is it decent?

Kanetix is a company that gets online estimates for you from a bunch of the big insurance companies. I used them when I was looking around, and, while they're a useful tool, they're really just a step in the process.

I'm with Belair Direct, as they provided the best rate for me. I haven't had any issues yet, so I can't really speak for them on that end.

We are with Intact and they've been great so far (going on two years), decent rates and good service

I was happy with Intact to start but they started messing up everything. Every two weeks we received a new pink slip for our car. They were constantly changing the spelling of our last name for whatever reason. Impossible to get a hold of after that.

Since switching to TD we've saved a boatload of money and in our recent claim towards our house because of flooding, TD was so accommodating I felt like inviting them over for dinner :)

So the Ontario Minister of Finance, Dr Seuss, said the province is on track to lower car insurance rates by 15 per cent over the next two years and auto insurance rates have dropped a total of 4.66 per cent since August 2013, according to latest figures provided by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario in mid-January.

Mine went up 16%..... No tickets, claims (ever) $1000 deductibles... I mean wtf? Based on this I expect it to go up another 15% before they give me my 15% discount.

Must be run by Nucky Thompson or something ... More political BS. Nothing more

Or maybe you need to shop around a bit for better rates.  I still see quite a range in rates when I shop for insurance.  I check every year before I renew.

We are with RBC... same amazing service experience on a flood claim last spring.

My RBC quote was $1000 higher than my TD quote.  Obviously, I went with TD.

And when I contacted RBC to give them an opportunity to review and improve their quote, they gave me a bologna response that their rates are competitive.  Yeah, if you say so...

And I had a TD quote that was $500 higher than RBC!!

It's all about the demographic they are targeting as the customers they want vs. the ones they don't want.  it's all about risk tolerance based on your stats as a driver, where you live and where you work (drive to).

And no, insurance companies never price match.  It's not a bargaining thing.. ever.

I can't knock RBC's service in regards to insurance as I've never dealt with them. I absolutely hated banking with them but that's different.
