"Grizz" has quickly become a fan favorite here in Ottawa since crossing the train tracks earlier this summer. Has been a big part of Ottawa's most consistent line playing with Kyle Turris and Bobby 'fing' Ryan. Clearly enjoying his role in the top 6 and on the PP unit.

Re-signed by Ottawa, 5 years 4.65M AAV.

A couple years longer than I would have committed to him - especially since he still has a year left on his current deal - but, that's about the going rate for a ~20 goal, ~50 point winger.

That's my issue with it, 2 years too long. He's probably getting 600k too much, but the length would be more concerning for me, if I cared what Ottawa did.

Actually, I think the cap hit is a little below the market rate. He'd probably get pretty close to $5M per if he was a UFA.

I think that's probably close to being true but I think that's really a testament to how badly teams misjudge players as UFA's. I think Mac is a 20 goal, 50 point guy if you can stick him as the third wheel on a pretty good line that gets  good ES/PP ice time but I also don't think that's a particularly rare or valuable commodity. It's definitely the sort of thing a team should look internally at having.

I guess. I'm not really convinced that he'll score like that over a 5 year period, didn't his stats drop off after his big year here?

I agree with Nik's point above and think that that type of player should be sought internally. If it was my team, I wouldn't give a third line winger 5 million a season, but I perhaps would give that to a really good third line center.

His assist totals dropped, but his goal totals didn't really (21 vs 20). Some of his drop off was due to Kulemin's goal scoring drought.

Also, I think you missed Nik's point - largely due to Nik's typo. He said 3rd line when I'm pretty sure he meant 3rd guy. He's a top 6 winger that's getting a good chunk of PP time in Ottawa.
