Cody Franson

Looks like he'll be back:

Once lockout is over, I expect TOR to announce a 1 year deal with defenceman Cody Franson. Likely for a shade over $1M. #tsn

I suspect Carlyle wants to take a look at the Franson that was pretty effective for Nashville, he probably saw a lot of him while coaching Anaheim.

Cody may surprise. Do not forget that he has played competitive hockey for last 3 months which can make him most game-ready D-men. If he translates this advantage well and has a good season, he will be rewarded by next contract.

I like what I saw from Franson last year.  He could be a very good defenseman, he has the size and skating ability and a good first pass. A good signing

I don't know.. Maybe I didn't see enough of him but I really can't say I was impressed with the small sample Wilson and Carlyle provided me.

He had his ups and downs. Like most of the team, his defence needed work, but, I'm willing to give him a bit of a pass as an individual considering it was a team-wide (and likely systemic) mess. He was very good on the offensive side of the puck. I really like the physical aspect he sometimes brought, and if he can become more consistent with it, I think he'll be a very valuable part of the team.

Considering the make-up and talents of the defensemen already under contract I don't know how much PT to expect to be given to a talented offensive defenseman with defensive weaknesses, even one with size and the occasional glimpse of physicality. As is, Gunnar is the only defenseman on the club I'd rate as even above average defensively.

From what I've seen of him, Franson appears to be below average in all facets of his game.  Sure the price tag is nice in the abstract, but guys like Franson just aren't good enough.  Defence is an area that the Leafs should be looking to completely overhaul.

***Warning: The following post is from a Leaf fan and includes three 'ifs' before the season starts.***
Leafs D-men have been for most part as strong as an ox, although unfortionately, as slow and agile as one.  Too many times, a defenseman was gambling.  Forwards would get around Schenn and Komisarek.  Franson isn't going to be covering one half of the ice all by himself either.  Hopefully all the defensemen's training has been more focused on speed and agility.  If Carlyle can rein in the chances... and my biggest hope, get forwards to play back, the Leafs won't be caught playing with only one man back anymore.  And if they do that, I don't think Franson will look that bad. ...don't think Komi will look that bad, think the goaltending will look miles better, and think the team will make the playoffs.

Imagine if Carlyle can get some forwards to play defensively?  I'd love to see some Krushelnyski, Zezel, Osborne, Bill Berg...

TSNBobMcKenzie: Franson's deal is believed to be one year, $1.2M. Mottau's is believed to be one year, two-way deal, $850K in NHL.
