Cody Franson

Franson is starting to look good. He has a few points and is using his big body to hit. He wrote off Stamkos beside the net last night. Wilson is going to have a tough decision when Komisarek gets healthy.

Great opportunity for Cody and he seems to have made an adjustment in his play, the Leafs aren't the Nashville Snoozers after all.

I hate to say it but I hope Komi's pain is the Leafs gain.

They said 8 weeks for Komisarek so it's a ways off.  By that time some other guy might go down to injury and Komisarek gets back in without issue.  If Franson keeps playing like he has the last little while it's a no brainer decision to me, you sit Komisarek.  Again though, that decision won't have to be made for a long time.  The playoff picture will be even more clear by that time.

I did not get to see him play while he was with Nashville. I expected more from him. He has not been bad or anything, I expected more shots and points and bigger hits.

You expected more from Snoozeville's number 5-6 dman?

You expected more than 0.5 PPG?  I will give you shots, but again, hits?  Frason isn't a hitter.

Franson is not known as a hitter but he may be learning he needs to use that 6'5" size to play well. He tied Schenn with 5 hits last game.

Franson's favorite Leaf is Wendel Clark.  As long as Franson doesn't score on his own net, he's ok in my books.

I'm liking what I'm seeing now... In my opinion, he's well on his way into developing into a really solid top 4 guy.

Yup. Loved the move and glad he's finally getting the right amount of ice time. He's been one of the more solid d-men we have as of late.

Cody is a keeper. If you need to move some defencemen, give up Schenn, Komi and perhaps Aulie, we seem to have plenty in the system. And we can give Finger the Finger!

Certainly I agree with you assessment about Komi.  But realistically what team in the NHL would take him, and his contract (for another 2 1/2 years)?

And it is interesting with Schenn, since about 3 years ago or so, Cliff Fletcher deemed him "untouchable" when discussing trade options.  Now, after seeing him play, it just doesn't seem that he is a potential star.  He doesn't get many points.  He seems to be out of position.  His mobility isn't as good.  He still makes a disporportionate amount of mistakes in his own end, IMHO.  If the Leafs did trade him, it ultimately might not make much of a difference to winning or losing games.

Possibly Aulie might have the highest upside of any of the younger defencemen on the Leafs.  He is strong, and has good awareness, and is quite solid defensively.

I think Komisarek can be moved.

I moved my response to Burke's Depth thread though.  :)

I also really hope that the Leafs keep Aulie for he strength's that he brings to the Leafs.  Especially his ability to fight when appropriate because with Orr with the Marlies, Aulie is now the best fighter on the team (no offense Brown).

How to you figure that?  So he dropped Hartnell and Ryan Carter, abrasive players but hardly fighters themselves.  I like that Aulie is a big strong kid, that will drop the mitts but he is not close to Rosehill, not even Brown.  Maybe he can get to that but to early to grant him the best fighter just yet.

Am I the only one who has been extremely underwhelmed by Aulie?

He was awful in the pre-season, awful on the Marlies and, according to every metric put together by PPP, is actually detrimental to Phaneuf's play when he is the same line as him. Seeing him play he doesn't use his size effectively, gets beat a lot and is an offensive black hole. He's just a big guy, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah I'm not understanding the Aulie love from his play that I've seen. He has great size I suppose. :-/

Yea I wouldn't be against dealing Schenn to the Blues for a guy like Berglund or Stewart.

OK maybe I was a little early in giving Keith the "belt" but I do really like his perspective on when to fight.

Last year he took on Greg Stewart in October after Greg had 11 fights the previous season and went toe to toe.  Towards the end of the year he kind of got jumped by big Andre Deveaux and Andre quit fighting at the end when Aulie began to turn the tables (Aulie couldn't get his right glove off for almost the 1st half of the fight).

This year Aulie was jumped by Brad Malone after throwing a cross check and he handled Brad as well.  But it is more than the ability, it is the air of confidence he has.  If you see the Malone fight, Aulie is skating calmly and confidently to the box.  That is what I like.  He is somewhere between 6-5 and 6-6 depending on who you ask and is as strong as a horse.

He is still young for a defenceman at 22 who should only get better.

Anyway, this thread is about Franson and he is a young, big dman who seems to have a decent ceiling.
