Coyotes fire Maloney

As an outsider, this is pretty surprising.

I have no idea how he gets along with ownership, so maybe he saw this coming.

Maybe just time for a change.

I don't think Maloney has been doing a bad job. Quite the opposite but the results on the ice just aren't there... yet. I think the Yotes have a good core. Missing a top center.

Rumors on twitter that ownership is intent on getting Matthews in the draft no matter what, Maloney was not on board because he knows it'll mean gutting the team.

So whoever gets that first pick could be in for a Coyotes winfall in a trade.  Interesting possibility if it's true.  Let's wait and see what happens at the lottery ball dropping before we start dreaming up some scenarios.  ;D

Imagine if that were true, that the Leafs quitely and secretly prefer Laine over Matthews anyway, and the lottery has it that Toronto picks #1 and Arizona #2.  It would be hilarious to see Arizona hand over a significant bunch of assets to draft a guy that would've dropped to them anyway if they did nothing.

Dreger and Mirtle were saying ownership was pushing for an analytics-driven management team.

That wouldn't make sense to do now if that were the case.  What if Phoenix wins the lottery?

Just to be clear, that's akin to saying "I heard someone say this on the bus this morning". Nobody credible seems to actually be suggesting this.

I always wondered why the sens didn't look at analytics more. I don't think we'll see an Oakland A's/Moneyball situation in the NHL but they can still be incredibly worthwhile for a low-budget team. The Coyotes already have a very young analytics person as their AGM.

Yeah, that's where they should be spending to try to get better value talent.

Murray's replacement Pierre Dorion is pretty analytics friendly:

K: There's a lot of news about analytics experts being hired around the league like mathematicians, bloggers, etc. Do the Sens currently employ anyone for analytics?

PD: Yes we do. We have an independent gentleman who we use. Our management side has used him and our coaches have used him as well. A lot of people publicize what they do with hockey analytics, we like to keep it all in-house. We have someone who we think is very capable of giving us really good information in terms of hockey analytics. We don't always agree with what he's saying, which is good because it's a totally different perspective than what we are used to dealing with. I think it opens our eyes and it makes us think about how we do things. I think it's a tool we use to make ourselves better.

So, they're not trading for Matthews then? Cool.

And let's be fair, even the people who didn't like President Obama aren't as obsessed with what's on a guy's birth certificate than some hockey fans. Everyone else tends to look at it as a business.

...save those who think Stamkos signing in Toronto is a fait accompli.

Well, no, those are the guys who fall into the first category.

Fail.  :P

Lou: I don't fell I have to wipe everyone out -- just my enemies -- that's all. You gonna come along with me in these things I have to do -- or what. Because if not you can take your wife, your family, and your mistress -- and move 'em all to Arizona.

Kyle: Why do you hurt me Lou? -- I've always been loyal to you -- I mean what is this.

Lou: So -- you're staying?

Kyle: Yes, I'm staying. Now what is it that you want me to do?

I really hope that behind the scenes the intention is that Dubas is really being groomed to be the GM.  I think we see that happen in the next two years when Lou steps back.
