Dale Hunter not returning to Washington

Definitely not unexpected considering the 1-year contract he received. First name I thought of to take his place: Ron Wilson. I think the team needs to get some of its offensive flair back.

Wilson and the Caps back together? Stranger things have happened. I can't imagine Ron will want to retire on such a sour note.

i guess i'm a little surprised..when he took over the team it wasn't going anywhere..certainly not the playoffs..

they not only ended up in the playoffs but within one game of going on to the conference final ...and really that new york series could have ended a lot differently it's not like they were lucky to see it go 7...

Fear not for Dale.  He immediately resumes his job behind the London Knights bench as they head to Quebec for the Memorial Cup.  I don't know how much stake to put into it, but I think family had a reasonable part in why he didn't stick around in the NHL.  The travel is very different running the Knights (who are profitable and the Hunter's poop gold in London when it comes to hockey reputation).

It sounds like it was more Dale's decision than it was the Caps. Like LK explained, he's going back to London for family reasons.

Speaking of Wilson, I can't remember the last high-profile fired coach to go this long without saying anything to the media. He's been a complete ghost since he was let go. I'm sure he's enjoying spending time with his family and such, but I can't even imagine how many press interviews he's had to decline/ignore.

TSNBobMcKenzie: WSH GM George McPhee may wait as late as July or August to find his replacement for departed head coach Dale Hunter. He's in no hurry.

I think he probably knows himself and the media in TO well enough to know he would say something that would end up blowing up in his face and risk hurting future coaching chances.

It couldn't really have ended in a more embarrassing and pride-crushing way than it did for him here.  Best to just move the heck on and lay low until there is reason to come back up again.

I think he might be the right fit for the Caps though.  He did good stuff with Kessel so he could do just as well or better with managing Ovie.
