GareJoyceNHL: Heard a rumble tonight that Dave Morrison is in trouble with the arrival of Lou with the #Leafs. If he's out, won't be out long.

GareJoyceNHL: Yeah Dave Morrison is out. #Leafs.

So there's some conflicting stuff out there about this. Guess we probably won't know for sure until the morning.

On the one hand, Morrison kind of does need to go as he brings little value to the table in light of Hunter's capabilities. On the other hand, this move doesn't make much logistical sense seeing as how it was LL's first day post-announcement and he was in NJ all day cleaning out his office and saying his farewells.

You know the more I think about something like this, the more it annoys me.  In the rush to be the first to break a story someone manages to go ahead and publish that a guy loses his job.  There is no fact checking or confirmation and the very same evening the man himself has to confirm that he in fact has not been fired.

It's possible this might happen down the road and makes it somewhat of a moot point but I really hope that guys like Babcock and Shanahan are watching this stuff and thinking about it every time they talk about the players obligation to be around the media in Toronto.  Maybe the Toronto media should be shown to not be a complete liability before we make commitment to the media a part of the mandate with this team.

If anything, now Morrison can't be fired for Shanahan and Lamoriello to maintain the 'veil of secrecy' reputation.  :-X

I think Joyce heard from two people about talks of a change and the interviews with scouts that were taking place and leapt to a bit of a conclusion for the sake of 'FIRST!', the man's livelihood and peace of mind be damned.

Just because some members of mainstream media are not worth the time, doesn't mean the Leafs shouldn't invest in teaching its players and staff how to handle the media pressure and idiocy. If anything, this apparent policy of presenting an honest and positive brand up and down the organization will fracture any support unreliable and baiting media personalities might have garnered over more tumultuous years.

You'll always have people at the end of the spectrum causing a ruckus (even here!); I don't think that should preclude you from doing it right anyway.

If you're going to ascribe blame for this to "the media" rather than one guy based on the idea that he went to twitter despite not being firm on his sources because of some sort of existing pressure to be the first one reporting the news, couldn't you just as easily blame the fans who follow these guys on Twitter and create that pressure?

Mistakes in journalism caused by that sort of public-driven interest in immediacy isn't at all unique to the Leafs.

So talk about this has fizzled out, seems like Joyce may have just been wrong about this.

It wouldn't have really made all that much sense anyway. I mean, it was just a few months ago that Shanahan & co. completed a thorough review of the teams scouting staff and fired basically everybody except Dave Morrison. I find it a little hard to believe that just one day after Lou was announced as GM he was able to a) review Morrison's work as director of scouting and decide that he wasn't the best man for the job and b) convince the rest of the team that he should be fired when just a few months ago they made the decision to keep him around.

That's if you assume that Lamoriello made the call.  If he had been fired, it could have been the "team's" decision all along to eventually fire him, but they held off on the actual decision to let the newly appointed GM do the duty when he came aboard.  That shows that the new GM is coming in and has the power to start making moves.  Of course all this is moot now since it didn't happen.

You still need somebody in the role of director of amateur scouting though, Hunter's role on the team is much more than just that. Especially during the season. He can't be the one overseeing all of that AND working on the pro-hockey side of things too. Is Morrison the right man for that job? Well, I've come around a little bit to the idea that some of his failures/misses can be attributed to the idea that he was drafting to fulfill the needs of his GM (i.e. targeting the  testosterone/truculence type players). So I'm basically at the point now where I don't think he absolutely has to go but that it's possible there's somebody out there better for the job.

Maybe, I really don't see Shanny feeling like he has to play games like that with the media though. And again, they decided to keep him on the staff just a few months ago. So unless Hunter observed Morrison during the draft and decided that he wasn't cutting it there isn't really a reason for everyone to have changed their minds on his fate. I suppose that's possible, but I don't see them waiting all this time to finally make the decision.

But really what's Morrison's role?  If he is head of scouting why was all the media reporting that the draft was all Hunter's call?  Seems like Hunter is the true head of scouting now, which would mean that Morrison's role has already been marginalized.  Maybe it's just an official change of title now?

I don't doubt that Morrison's role has been marginalized a tad, but his role was never technically to have complete control over the draft, that's always a GMs call. But the director of amateur scouting would usually have a large part in advising the GM on that. Now Morrison is advising Hunter at the draft, but Hunter has more knowledge on the draft itself than a traditional GM would have.

I think though that the biggest role of a director of amateur scouting is to manage the group of amateur scouts under him. That's still likely Morrison's role as like I said Hunter just can't do everything.

I think that is a very fair point; thanks for that. I saw Nonis in the last days of the season-that-was very much the same way.
