Dermott re-signed - 2 years, $1.5M per

This seems about fine for what he brings, and if he ever takes that next step it'll be great. Still kinda doubtful about that happening though.

Yeah I'm kind of ambivalent to him at this point.  I know he's only 24 going on 25 but I haven't really seen his game develop in the last 2-3 years where I felt like he was just inching toward a breakout.  He's an ok 3rd pairing guy.

So far we have done:

Spezza 750K
Simmonds 900K
Dermott 1.5M

That's a net 76K in additional cap expense for those three players compared to last year.

Fine if he makes the team, fine if he goes in the expansion draft. I still think he's young enough that he can get better.

I like this signing.  I also feel like the Leafs know who Seattle is going to take (probably as part of the Hakstol swap), otherwise they wouldn't have done this now.

He can be the exposure requirement for D now that he is signed.

Now they can protect Holl if they want to (but shouldn't)
I don't see them going the 8 skaters route. I think they already know who Seattle is taking and will leave both Dermott and Holl unprotected.

Agreed, Holl should be left unprotected.  He was exposed plenty of times this year. His best games for some reason were against the Oilers.

bbbbbut that would be collusion and that's unfair and against the rules.  It'd be like, say, having a superstar forward "rehab" for much longer than necessary just so you could bring him back in fully rested for the playoffs and use him as jet fuel to power your way to a championship.

Nah, scratch that last example.  Even the NHL wouldn't go so far as to allow something like that.

Actually, Dermott acquitted himself well in R1, better than my boy Rasmus, truth be told.

Agreed on that ZBBM, Dermott is worth keeping.  Holl is a great guy, nice team-mate but lets face it, he was not great against the Habs, at all.

Nope. Holl was very good for stretches of the regular season, but was exposed at times - and definitely was in the playoffs.

Are we still doing 8/1 or 7/3 with draft protection?

Tavares/Matthews/Marner/Nylander are really the only four guys you *NEED* to protect from the forwards.

Rielly/Brodie/Muzzin are the three you need to protect on the blueline.

If they go 8/1 you can add Dermott in a protect and risk losing either Holl or Kerfoot.  or you aim for the 7/3 and protect Kerfoot and risk losing one of Holl or Dermott.

I wonder if losing Hyman and Kerfoot from the penalty kill is a lot to ask of the team defensively.

This is probably mostly accurate but at the same time we're talking about a guy with a $2mil AAV so it's not like we should be expecting a Ryan McDonagh like performance. Even with his hiccups considering all the minutes he eats up I still think he's one of the few players on the team who provides more value than he costs. As long as he's one of the top-2 right side defencemen on the team I think it'd be a mistake to lose him.

If Dermott were an RHD life would be better.

Dermott and the Leafs have both been pretty open about being comfortable with him playing on the right side. If they thought he was capable of playing those minutes alongside Muzzin they'd have tried him there more often.

I don't like it, it's against the Grain of Nature.
