Game Notes

NJ
?Domingue (3-4-0, 3.07 GAA, .898 Sv%) will likely start for the Devils
?Blackwood has taken over the starter duties in New Jersey but he's missed the past 2 games with an upper body injury. Cory Schneider is also back in the NHL after 2 months in the AHL. He's played 8 games there: lost the first 4 with an .828 Sv% and then won the next 4 with a .955 Sv%. Any of these 3 goalies could end up getting the start
?Since trading Taylor Hall the Devils have actually gone 7-4-2. That was no enough to save the job of GM Ray Shero who was recently fired

TOR
?Andersen (21-8-5, 2.82 GAA, .912 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?The Leafs are coming off one of their most embarrassing losses of the season and of course the mood around the team did not get much better after the news of Rielly being out for 8 weeks came out
?The bright side to the Rielly injury is it of course gives the team a chance to take a longer look at Rasmus Sandin. No word on what the defence pairings will look like yet so I just made an educated guess

Injuries

?Mackenzie Blackwood - Upper Body - Questionable Tuesday
?Kyle Palmieri - Lower Body - Questionable Tuesday
?Ben Street - Upper Body - Injured Reserve
Code:

?Morgan Rielly - Foot - Injured Reserve
?Trevor Moore - Concussion - Injured Reserve
?Jake Muzzin - Foot - Injured Reserve
?Ilya Mikheyev - Wrist - Injured Reserve

We really need to get back on a winning streak here and with Jersey coming in after wins against Washington and Tampa it won't come easy.

Possible Ceci scratch, or is this just another pay bonus day?

I guess with both Rielly and Muz on the shelf they have tons of cap room to bring guys up if they wanted to.

Would be fun tonight to see
Barrie - Dermott
Holl - Marincin
Sandin - Liljegren

I actually don't think Ceci merits a scratch.  :-\

I was thinking
Dermott-Barrie
Sandin-Holl
Marincin-Liljegren

Ceci on Robidas Island?

I know with both Rielly and Muzzin out the defence appears to be in a shambles, but I'm strangely excited to see what this group can do (especially if Lilypad also gets in with Sandin)

NJ isn't exactly a powerhouse, so we'll see how the group can compete tonight, hopefully it goes well.

I feel the same way.  Excited to see what the kids can do.

Ceci on Robidas Island?
Just for a game or two. I'd just like to see what the two kids can do since they're likely to be our 3rd pairing in 2020-21. Holl-Marincin can semi cope in a shut-down role (or at least probably better than Holl-Ceci) and that leaves a top pairing of [pick two] Barrie/Dermott/Ceci. Of those three, Ceci would ride the pine if I had to choose who to task with #1 pairing minutes for the next 4-5 games. He can swap in for Marincin or something if that second pairing is getting caved, not that he'd necessarily be that much of an upgrade.

For what it's worth that strikes me as fairly unlikely. I think both guys will be on the team but I don't think one pairing will have both rookies on it.

In fact, I think that may be part of the thinking with Sandin. If you give him 25-35 games and he looks good then you can probably justify putting him on the 2nd pairing next year and giving both guys some veteran cover.

When he was called up this morning there was a small part of me that thought maybe he was finally getting a chance, but then reality hit. They aren't scratching Ceci when they're already down two regular veterans to injury. Just not happening.

Still, seems odd to do if they just want him there for atmosphere intake.  Maybe they'll put him out there against what should be a weak opponent, especially one w/o a whole lot of firepower.  Gotta debut sometime.

But I wouldn't pair him with Sandin.

Barrie-Dermott
Holl-Sandin
Marincin-Liljegren (or Ceci instead of 52)

And to affirm what Nik said, next year I highly doubt there'll be a 37/38 pairing.

I really don't think it's that odd. The more time he spends in the big leagues now, even if he isn't playing, the more comfortable he'll be next season when he is playing. It's also just a nice reward (both mentally and financially) for a player who's been a big part of the Marlies for the past 3 years.

And of course who knows, if a defenceman pulls something in the morning skate or warm-ups he can step in.

Or, you know, what Keefe said I guess:

That means he's in tonight.  1st pairing.

Have to agree with this at this point in time but it will ultimately depend on what the rest of the season brings and how Liljegren and Sandin progress.
