Draisaitl's New Deal, 8 yrs/8.5 aav

I don't know how to feel about this.
I thought Chiarelli was going to trade this 21 year old.

Market set for Nylander/Marner?

No one deal is going to set a market for anyone else. I do think, though, that this maybe contributes to the idea that people hoping to get them locked up to Hall/Seguin like 2nd deals were probably being optimistic.

If you figure 8.5 for Nylander and Marner, and some people are saying 11 for Matthews, you are looking at $28 million tied up in those three.  If the cap stays 75 million for the next little bit, that would mean you have 37% of your cap tied up on those three players.

Nylander and Marner won't get as much as Drais did.

What if they put up 75 points each this season?

Then we should all be ridiculously happy because then Matthews will have scored 50 and we'll probably have the best offensive in the league.

And if the cap doesn't work, the more points marner/nylander score, the more valuable they become and the more plausible it is to trade one of them for a number 1 d, which may get paid less but be just as valuable.

I think that using the information that we have today I can say they won't get $8.5mil. They could get 75 points next season. Or 100. Or 50. It's difficult to project like that. Although even if they get 70 points next season and sign a contract after that I still think $8mil is the ceiling because of the Johansen and Kuznetsov deals. I really think that Draisaitl's contract is pretty high, especially after only 1 good season where he put up most of his points playing beside a 100-point player. Edmonton made a big mistake this past season by not having Drais centre his own line to see what he's capable of doing on his own before committing to a deal like this.

Anyway, as far as Nylander especially goes this is all moot, because the Leafs would be nuts to not have a contract extension worked out before the puck drops this season.

Totally agree!

And then hopefully Marner signs an identical extension when his time comes regardless of how his 17/18 season goes because he's such a swell guy.

That's my thinking as well, but I"m still waiting for the contract announcement on Nylander.  Hope they do it prior to training camp.  Lock that blonde haired stud up for 8 years.
