Drouin to Montreal for Sergachev

Kind of bugs me that the Habs just got better.

Their prospect pipeline is now pretty much toast, but with Price and Weber on the hook in a soft Atlantic, that is pretty much the way it has to be for them.

Good on Yzerman for snagging Sergachev instead of Galchenyuk.

Are there rules to the conditions? Like a list of possible conditions to choose from? Or can GMs get creative with these?

They can get creative, but I'm sure there are some rules that have to be followed.  Not sure where they are listed though.

I understand why both teams would make this trade but I don't love it for either team. I get why after a year of getting beat up in the press why Montreal would make a move like this for a talented local guy but if the goal was to get a cup out of the Weber-Price years, which is a long shot anyway, then I really think Sergachev hitting his potential helps them more than Drouin.

For Tampa, obviously they had to move out some salary and I suppose that they did about as well as they could but I really think Drouin can be a 60-70 point scorer and ultimately they got a prospect for him.  A good prospect, sure, but that's a lot of value to expect out of him.

I really like this deal for Montreal. I think that Sergachev will probably need to become a top-3 defenceman for him to reach Drouin's level, which is possible but not a sure thing by any means. I think he's been a little overrated as a prospect since being drafted.

Obviously, Tampa gets the added benefit of having him on his ELC for 3 seasons instead of Drouin who will be coming off of his and onto a much larger contract. They also gain an extra protection slot in the expansion draft, which I suppose has some value since it appeared as though they would have lost a good forward prior to the trade (although losing Killorn's contract may have been a good thing). If they get that 2nd that also helps even the gap.

But still at the end of the day I think Montreal just gets the best player, both now and in the future.

Is Sergachev really that great? Kind of an unknown at this point, no?

Really how great? He's a very good prospect, probably at the upper end of prospects who might get moved. But he is, like all prospects, ultimately largely unknown.

The Habs are apparently still actively shopping Galchenyuk, so there's still a chance they make a bonehead move this offseason.

I'd love that kinda of deal for our triplets post ELC.
Except our triplets all put up more points in their first full season than Drouin has. It's gonna get ugly with those contracts

That's probably true - definitely now, and Drouin's ceiling is definitely higher than Sergachev's, so quite likely in the future, as well. The currently unanswerable question is obviously how much better with Drouin be in the future?

Also, looking at the make up of the respective teams, I feel like the Habs might have had more use for Sergachev than Drouin (though, that's pretty dependant on them re-signing Radulov - if he re-signs, they become a reasonable offensive threat, and maybe need to rely on Price to steal them points a little less); while the Lightning could afford to move Drouin without really losing much on offence.

Ultimately, I think, while the Habs got the better player, if Radulov doesn't re-sign with Montreal and Stamkos can have a relatively healthy season, I think Tampa may have done more to potentially improve their team.

This trade kind of hammers home an intriguing what if scenario. In 2013 the Lightning had Palat, Johnson and Killorn all in the AHL and producing like gangbusters. They also had Kucherov in the system. Their strength, at the NHL level, was unquestionably a forward group with Stamkos, St. Louis and Lecavalier.

Despite this with the 3rd pick they pass on Seth Jones and pick Drouin. If Yzerman had simply had a better read of his prospects that team could be scary good right now.

True, but they would be in the same surplus to protect in the expansion if they drafted Jones.

Well, not exactly the same. They'd be at risk of losing someone like Garrison but even then that's a hell of a core group going forward.
