Duchene traded to Columbus... Dzingel too

Not quite official yet, but it looks like Duchene is heading to Columbus with at least Abramov and Davidsson going back the other way.

This will help ease the Blue Jackets' pain of flushing Panarin out at the deadline.

And in case you were wondering how cheap Melnyk is, Columbus is in Ottawa tonight for a game so they don't have to cover as much travel costs. I predict Mark Stone to Calgary on the 24th for a 1st, Oliver Kylington, and Kerby Rychel.

edit: it sounds like part of the deal might include a Duschene extension?

I know I'm kind of going on a run with this off-colour note, but Columbus trading for a Duche to clear out Panarin is my kind of pun fun.

Getting two 1st rounders if Duchene re-signs is pretty good for the sens actually.

Abramov was a guy I liked in his draft years, really small and put up a ton of points in the Q. He's 20 now and playing in the AHL for the first time and not putting up a ton of points. But he seems to be on a veteran squad that isn't really that high scoring, so there's still potential there.

It doesn't make up for what the sens gave up to originally acquire Duchene, but if they did the smart thing and gave up last years 1st rounder instead of this years then they could have made out pretty well. Especially if Duchene re-signs with Columbus.

Could you imagine haha

I don't know about Columbus giving up those firsts. Ok they hold the hammer on the conditional pick because if they don't want to give it up they just don't re-sign Duchene. The first this year though -- Columbus isn't currently in a playoff spot, I realize they have games in hand and points percentage they are, BUT, if they go into a tailspin and miss suddenly Ottawa has a lottery pick again. Sure it would be low odds since Columbus would just miss the playoffs but still it's a lottery pick none the less

Edit: Bob McKenzie just said the first this year is top 3 lottery protected so Columbus covered themselves

Columbus could be the team that faces Tampa first round. Panarin, Duchene, a bunch of gritty forwards, two top defencemen in Jones/Werenski. Then there's Bob who's definitely capable of stealing games if not an entire series.

It's not a bad return or anything but overall Ottawa's Matt Duchene experience is:

To get him:

Kyle Turris
Shane Bowers
Andrew Hammond
3rd round pick
1st round pick(or The Hughes Pick)

For him:

Abramov
Davidsson
1st
1st(maybe)

That's terrible. It's not even particularly good if you ignore the Hughes Pick being the Hughes Pick.

That's ignoring the fact that Ottawa had Duchene for a year and a half. And imo it changes if Ottawa signs Duchene in summer. Not how Ottawa saw this all play out but Duchene gave them a couple decent seasons.

I suspect that second 1st round pick is a bit of a pipe dream. If Panarin and Bobrovsky both leave in the summer, staying in Columbus would become awfully unappealing for a guy who has spent his entire career on mediocre to poor teams. You'd also have to think Columbus would want to start a rebuild at that point, and wouldn't be super keen on sacrificing their 1st rounder.

It's not ignoring it, it's just thinking there wasn't too much value in Duchene being ok on crummy teams(and, really, he was more or less bad last year for them)

Why in the world would Duchene sign with a crummy Ottawa team in the summer when it looks like he had no interest in signing with them now?

I don't see 49 points in 68 games as bad?? It's pretty close to his career average. From all reports he likes it in Ottawa. Who said he had no interest in signing? Maybe Ottawa balked at 8th year. I predict back in Ottawa or Nashville.

Sub 50% on CF, a robust -23, scoring at only a 59 point pace despite almost 19 minutes a game and 3 minutes a night on the PP(barely in the top 100 in pts/60)...I could go on but it's a deeply mediocre run for a guy in the #1 C spot.

More indicative of team than just player.
