One of the best deals in the league. Man I hope we're in cap hell when we need to re-sign our big RFAs. Maybe THAT'S why we signed Matt Martin.

Also they basically kills any motion of an offer sheet in this day and age. If it didn't happen here then it's just not going to happen.

If I could make any one change to the league as it currently exists I think it would be a RFA system closer to what the NBA's got going on. Do away with compensation but still give teams the right to match. All the current system does is divert money from good young players to UFAs.

That would make things SO much more fun.

I agree with you, I suspect the owners and NHLPA would not.

What's Gardiner (UFA 2019, 28 years old) likely to get now, not that it's a direct comparison? He's definitely not Hedman level. $6M?

Ekblad $ is not happening again anytime soon for RFAs.

I think the NHLPA wouldn't care as there are probably benefits to having more players being bid on in an open market.

The owners, sure, would hate sacrificing control but it's not like they'd end up paying their teams more or less. They'd just actually be paying for performance. Who does it serve for Anaheim to be paying Kesler almost 7 million and Lindholm just over 5 vs. the other way around.

He won't touch $6mil without averaging like 45-ish points in the next 3 seasons. Something between Demers ($4.5mil) and Niskanen ($5.75mil) seems likely. But that's still pretty far away.

In the real world,I agree regarding competition. In the NHL though you don't always have the greatest minds making decisions. These GM's would end up with 30-40% of the cap tied to two or three players and you'd have the bottom 3/4 of a roster made of players making the minimum.

Which means the majority of NHLPA members would probably make less than currently do.

In addition, the desperate runaway GM train would lead you head first into a hard lockout too.

This kind of thing is why I think Toronto is trying to win sooner rather than later.

I don't think they'll be rash with the future, but I think they see the value of trying to make noise while the stars of the team are on ELC contracts. There is probably too much dead cap space to get it done this year, but if they spend wisely in the off-season they could look very dangerous.

Looking at Matthews/Nylander/Marner we are probably only going to have the next 2 seasons where they represent value for money, they are all going to get big pay bumps when the time comes and that starts to limit what you can do with the rest of the lineup.

I think this is a huge part of the Andersen deal.
