Dustin Byfuglien signs 5-year contract extension with AAV of $7.6 million

Jets did pretty well here, I'm a big fan of Big Buff. Obviously his age will be a concern (it'll cover his 31-36 year old seasons), but keeping the term at 5 years was a good move for them.

I'm a little more curious to see what the Jets do now. They have two big question marks in Ladd and Trouba, and most people seem to think that a Buff signing will mean the end of both players' time in Winnipeg.

Yea, Lawless reported on the weekend that Trouba is probably being traded, and last month Ladds agent requested a trade, so looks pretty good that both Trouba and Ladd will be gone, Ladd most likely before the deadline. Ladd must be feeling dumb not for not accepting that 6 yrs at 6 million per offer back in the summer.

Why are they trading Trouba?

Rumours are he wants 7+ on his next deal, for 7-8 years, and he has also had some extra curricular issues away from the rink.

Yeah big contract demands plus now they have Buff and Myers both signed long-term so they'll occupy the top 2 RH spots on the blue line. Personally I don't really get it, but it really depends on what they get back. If they can trade for a similar-aged/potential'd centre then sure, but I don't know if there's an available player like that right now. Trouba for Johansen would have been a good deal for them, but that opportunity has obviously passed.

A potential trade parter could be Edmonton, if either doesn't mind trading within the same conference. Edmonton needs D and Winnipeg needs offensively minded Centers/Wingers.

I'd suggest Drouin, but I doubt Chevy even entertains it due to Drouins attitude. Maybe Montreal would be interested in trading Gallagher or Galchenyuk.

You know what, if Winnipeg is losing Ladd that leaves a pretty big hole on their left side. I know someone who could replace his production for a much more reasonable price...

JVR for Trouba?

Not sure if I'd want Trouba on the Leafs, unless his off ice issues have been resolved, which they may have been with Bogosian being traded last season.

I'm not the one in Winnipeg, but I've never heard of any off-ice issues surrounding Trouba before.

edit: I did a bit of googling about those "issues". Pretty comfortable not putting any stock in those types of rumours.

Ultimately I'm a little surprised. I'd have thought Buff could have gotten more on the open market and there's a part of me that just assumed he'd want to move south.

A part of me is surprised any time someone voluntarily chooses to play in Winnipeg.

I don't entirely get why a defenseman who hasn't cracked 30 points, and might not crack 20 this year, would ask for 7+ million on a long term deal but if he is then it certainly wouldn't be the first time a team floated those sorts of rumours when they had trouble signing a player.

They do keep things out of the media quite well, but a few things slip out from time to time and you hear from someone else, if the issues have been resolved then I'd like for the Leafs to look at trading for him and if we can get him for JvR + a little bit added, that'd be awesome.

I was trying to be polite about it.
