mirtle: Canucks announce they've signed Alex Edler to a long-term deal. There goes one big 2013 free agent...

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Edler deal in Vancouver: $30 M over 6 years

And the cap crunch in Vancouver gets . . . ummm . . . crunchier?

It's hard to say.  Gillis is too busy to worry about that.  He's busy keeping an eagle eye on the Leafs and their nefarious master plan of planting stories in the TO media designed to mess with his mind.  That dude is like something out of Scientology.

It definitely doesn't help their cap situation, but at that price Gillis pretty much had to sign that contract.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens by summer 2014, when they'll have to try to re-sign both Sedins and, as it stands right now, have $46M committed to 10 players.

Well, you can pretty much guarantee that Keith Ballard will be bought out. And if Gillis hasn't found a suitor for Luongo by that point he'll have that last opportunity to buy him out before the Sedins' contracts end. If he can move Luongo and still needs some space I'd imagine Booth would be a buyout candidate as well. Take those 3 guys out and consider that the Sedins would likely sign for below-market value and it's doable. That all hinges on a Luongo trade of course, which if/once Gillis lowers his demands I still believe is possible.

They won't have a lot of space left over for some secondary scoring though, which could mean trouble.

That's kind of what I'm getting at. I have no doubts they'll do whatever they can to keep the Sedins around - I just think it will be to the detriment of their overall team. Despite what their fans and GM want to believe, their window is closing fast.

I think they're even going to have a difficult time this season with Kesler and Booth out as long as they're going to be. A second line of Raymond-Ebbett-Kassian isn't going to cut it.

I don't really know Edler but I've heard he's pretty good (how does he compare with Phaneuf in terms of two-way play?). 5 million a year going forward for 6 years is a good deal if he plays like a solid 2-way top-2 defenseman.  It's all the other inefficient contracts the Canucks have -- though buyouts will help them.  And 9.3 million on your goal tending is not sustainable.  If Luongo is untradeable and a buyout is too expensive, then the Canucks might best optimize their chances by trading Schneider for some cheap, young, efficient contracts.

Gillis is going to have to actually put some significant pieces of his own in place!!?!?

Sedins as UFA next year is great. Both turning 34, it'll be their last retirement contract as their skills diminish. Enjoy canucks!
