Expansion draft

So if the 2 team expansion draft happens this year, and most think that will be the case, what will the rules be for protecting players?

The last expansion saw a couple different combos that if you protected 2 goalies, you could only protect 3 D men. Most could protect 1 goalie, 5 D men and 9 forwards.

If this happens 1 week before the draft, who would still be on our team to protect? Who would you protect?

But the big concern I have is the draft. Didn't the last expansion draft have  the 2 new teams select first two picks? If that happens then say good bye to Mathews and Chyrcryn.

I know the draft is a lottery pick for the first 3 picks this year. (Leafs will finish dead last and end up picking 4th because that is our luck), but the Lottery system this year gets a quick revamp if the expansion happens.

Also, I think that there is a rule in place that a team is forced to protect Players with an NMC or a NTC, which would change the whole dynamic of our team.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

I would protect
JVR,
Kadri,
Komorov,
Matthias,
Phaneuf,
Reilly,
Gardiner,
Harrington,
Marincin
Bernier.
I could still protect 5 more forwards but I think most will be gone or traded. Half the team could be gone at the trade deadline. I would protect Lupul and Bozo but they will likely be traded also. I think we end up keeping Matthias. He is big and fairly talented and has a point to prove. Also, Komorov is protected? If not, then he could be traded too.

I think the general feeling is that the two new teams wouldn't be entering the league until the 2017-18 season, so the 2016 entry draft would be safe for us.

Yeah. 17/18 at the very earliest. It could even be later than that. They haven't even gotten close to the stage where they're reviewing them and getting pitches from finalists. That process plus all the time to get things organized from a practical level seems have taken about 3 years on average in the past, sometimes longer. Minnesota and Columbus, for instance, were awarded teams in 1997 but didn't play until the 2000/2001 season. Also, in past years, expansion teams weren't eligible for the 1st overall pick in their first draft.

I also have to imagine that the expansion rules wouldn't be as favourable to the new teams as they'd been in the past.

Honestly, until the league actually announces A) if they're actually going ahead with expansion (likely, but not guaranteed), B) which cities are awarded teams, and C) which season they'll enter the league, there's just not much to be discussed with any sort of specifics when it comes to things like players to protect in expansion drafts, draft lotteries, etc.
