Game Notes

PHI
?Steve Mason went down with a back injury during practice on Friday and will not travel with the Flyers to Toronto
?Emery (5-4-1, 3.05 GAA, .899 Sv%) will start in his place with AHLer Rob Zepp filling in as back-up
?The Flyers have just 4 wins in their last 17 games
?This will be the first of 8-straight road games for the Flyers

TOR
?Bernier likely gets the start for the Leafs
?Carlyle kept his scrambled lines from the Carolina game, his practice lines sometimes don't make it to the games so it's possible they go back to JVR-Winnik-Lupul down the LW
?Some beat reporters are speculating that Gardiner could sit for Holzer after Carlyle called his recent play "erratic"
?For the Leafs this will be their last home game until January 7th

Injuries

"Erratic" describes Gardiner's whole season.  And that's being a bit charitable.  I'm all for being patient, though.

And as long as I'm grousing, Rielly has been pretty disappointing offensively so far.  He doesn't seem to have much of a shot, or at least not yet.  Having said that, it is hard as hell for really young defensemen in this league.  It took Hedman years, for example, to blossom and he was touted as the next Pronger when he went #2.

I can't see how he's been disappointing offensively.  He's 3rd on the team in defenseman scoring, 2nd in goal scoring, top 60 league-wide in defenseman points, and top 26 in goal scoring.  That's more than adequate, let alone for a player who's played little more than 100 NHL games.  If that's all we are getting from him 3 or 4 years from now, I'll be disappointed then.

I'm starting to believe Gardiner will top out as a better skating...worse shooting Dennis Wideman.  Not that that's a neccessarily a bad thing...but it ain't that great.

Well according to Wikipedia:
On December 19th,2014 Jake Gardiner,Joffrey Lupul,James Reimer and Tyler Biggs]] were traded to the Winnipeg Jets for Evander Kane and Ondrej Pavelec
So I guess that solves that problem.  ::)

I would love to get Kane as you all know but I didn't post that on Wiki.

It would have to be Clarkson, Gardiner, Ashton and Biggs for Kane and Stuart.  :)

Bernier starts tonight. Reimer goes tomorrow on the road, in the 2nd game of a B2B, and against probably the best team in the league.

Isn't that what most teams do?  Start your #1 goalie against the soft team and play the backup against the tough ones?

Teams play their back-ups against us all the time, so going by that...

He's scoring at a slightly lower rate than last season (26 points over 82 games this season vs. 30 pts over 82 games last season). 2nd seasons are usually a write-off though anyway.

I also think it's worth mentioning that their best chance to get a win out of three on the road is tonight. I'd guess that this team very much wants to avoid being on a four game losing streak heading into Christmas and so they'd be inclined to do everything they can to beat the Flyers.

Jake Gardiner getting extra reps this morning. Healthy scratch tonight?[/quote]

Seems likely. Jake also agreed with Randy's description of his recent play.

So Holzer comes in?  He of the 36.2% CF% since November 20.

"But he's tough and competes!"

I think part of what is impacting Gardiner is also impacting Rielly. Carlyle's system discourages defencemen from skating with the puck, and, well, for both Rielly and Gardiner, their ability to skate with the puck is one of their best assets.

I hope Gardiner can pull it together, because he's still put together some excellent rushes lately. His drive to the net and scoring chance last game was great. I'd love to see him and Phaneuf drive to the net more in fact (assuming our forwards are ready to back them up); they're both good at it.

You have a point.  But then again, it's to be expected from a coach whose nickname is "Legirons."

I seem to remember something similar said about Wilson and Kaberle. You can't skate the puck faster than passing it, so you have to learn to pick your spots, and frankly Gardiner is still very much a pupil.
