On Monday Rogers unveiled its broadcasting ?dream team? that will anchor national NHL coverage across all Rogers properties. The team will be led by George Stroumboulopoulos, the new host of Hockey Night in Canada.

Although he's a Habs fan, I like Strombo.  He seems like he'd be a good replacement for Ron McLean - in the same mould, so to speak...

It's not terrible, but they still lack anything in the way of insider information as TSN still lies claim to them.  They also failed to announce who is going to call all of these games.

If all it takes is to be a hockey fan (and a Habs fan at that) to get a gig like this then I'm mad I didn't get the nod ;)
Not enough of a hockey guy for me.....

There are 7 months until the new season starts, there's plenty of time to make those hires.

Don Cherry will apparently be working with George Stroumbouloulongo next season.

So Strombo takes over for Ron on HNIC's top spot on Saturday? I wonder why they would do that right off the bat instead of giving him a lesser role (Sunday night) to start?

Like it, despite the fact he's a huge Habs fan.

I'm glad Sportsnet is turning the page on Ron McLean for someone fresher, and far more interesting to listen to, without all the forced dramatics that McLean seems to have built into his shtick recently (esp. on Hostove, his combative interviews with Bettman, etc.).  Interesting that they reached outside the hockey world too.

Also glad they didn't end up going with Darren Millard.

I personally don't care about this "insider/sources say" stuff.  I don't really even want that on a HNIC broadcast.  It's about the games going on, not the trade rumors.

as far as play by play guys I have my fingers and toes crossed that the Canuck Fan/bobsy triplets (Hughsen, Simpson, Healy) are getting the wave goodbye.

There is more info here as well:

Looks like Jeff Marek is getting a big role. He has really grown on me since going to Sportsnet.

Big announcement today at 2pm on Sportsnet.

Marek's great. He's always been so criminally underused by Sportsnet though. The guys barely on their broadcasts. He should have always been in Millard's spot, and by the sounds of it Marek is still not going to have as big of a role as Darren.

Sounded more to me that he was going to be at least at the same level as Millard.  Marek hosting Thursday night hockey, Millard hosting Wednesdays.

Millard's Wednesday show is going to be national, while Marek's is just on SN 360. So that's a big difference. Millard will also do the regional Leafs games which is a huge audience while Marek gets the Friday night show/Memorial Cup which probably won't be big draws.

edit: The Friday night show Marek has is also a CHL program, not NHL. I didn't realize that at first.

I'm already sick of them using the "dream team" line.

I'll reserve judgment on Stombo. I like him, but I also have a huge soft spot for Maclean, who exudes professionalism and brings a certain quality to Saturday broadcasts that make the rinkydink Sportsnet broadcasts (and even TSN's broadcasts) look like cheap local television.  I hope he continues to have a significant role.

One of the reporters just asked if the CBC - Sportsnet relationship has been awkward.

Yes, dumb reporter, if that's true I'm sure the VP will spill those details on air at this press conference.

One reporter also brought up how it was great it was to see all the diversity on the team. I wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic.

he was being very sarcastic.

Valid question, but the way he asked it was pretty brutal.

"I'm glad someone asked, we can't stand it actually and it makes us physically ill. I hate these people beside me with a burning passion."

"One follow up - can you ask Randy Carlyle about why the Leafs blow so many 3rd period leads?"

Was he? I actually thought he was referencing the fact that there were people with different ages up there.

If he was being sarcastic, I'm not sure that says anything better about him as a reporter.
