#BREAKING: CTV News has confirmed that hockey legend Gordie Howe has died. He was 88.

Certainly well before my time, but it's easy to see the effect that he had on both the game and the community around it.

RIP Mr. Hockey.

Shame he couldn't have stuck around to see the closing of Joe Louis Arena. You get the sense that his presence would have been a major part in whatever ceremony the Wings would have planned.

Definitely. Sad day for the hockey world, and the Howe family.

Damn. I remember watching the Here's Howe tapes back in the day and feeling like Mr. Hockey was there in the room with you, RIP.

Some of the most beloved, and hated, hockey players from my youth are now passing away at an alarming rate.

As much as I've always hated the Detroit Red Wings, I'm deeply saddened by the passing of Gordie Howe.

To Mark, Marty, Murray, and Cathy, I feel your pain having lost both of my parents.  To the rest of his family and friends my sincere condolences.  To his fans, his former teammates, his former teams, I share in your grief.

Farewell Mr. Hockey!  Rest in Peace good Sir!    :'(

Another one of those figures that seem to transcend their sport and it is hard to imagine the sport without them.

It honestly feels like these people would live forever.  Can't imagine them not being here.

Strap on your skates, Gordie. You're going in.

I knew it was coming, but it's still such a loss.

I can't effectively put it into words. Dad loved Howe. I loved Howe. My son, the Benedict Arnold RedWings fan in a houseful of Leaf fans, loved Howe.

Fun memory 1: watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off with son and a bunch of his now 20 year old peers (it happened when they were all about 15 though). The others were all wondering the significance of Cameron's Red Wings jersey. And my son schooled them all about Gordie Howe. Although he'd never seen Howe play, he knew more about him than I do. Just now, he texted me "Gordie Howe just hung up his skates for the last time :-( "

Fun Memory 2: I'm about 14, hanging out at MLG waiting for players, for autographs. The RedWings team bus is outside awaiting the players (I assume to take them to their hotel after morning practice, the game is that night). Some of the players walk past all us autograph hounds (either ignored by us cause we don't recognise them, or ignoring us cause they don't wanna be bothered). Out comes Howe. To a *sea* of fans. And it's taking him forever to get through the crowd, to the point where guys on the bus are making smart ass comments. And Howe looks up from the signing, gives one guy a real death glare, and says "I was a kid once too" and proceeds to sign. Every. Last. Autograph. Classy, classy guy.

Met Gordie once as a kid. He was doing autographs at a local rink. Never saw a line so long, he got up half way though and said 'kids first'

Everyone complied, no one complained. It was amazing.
