Greinke to Arizona, 6 years and 206 million

I don't understand this move from either the Diamondbacks (well, Dave Stewart) or Greinke.  I don't see this working out well for Arizona.

I don't get it either from an Arizona standpoint, but from Greinke's standpoint it makes sense. Greinke has a social anxiety disorder that would make him favour signing with a small market team. He had to pump himself full of Zoloft to cope with playing in L.A.

Just to clear things up a little, Greinke taking Zoloft has nothing to do with him pitching in LA. He started taking it in 2006 while still with the Royals and has taken it ever since on every team he's been on(and I've never read anything to suggest he's taken more as a Dodger). By most accounts Greinke deals with the pressure of his job pretty well, including the media, but his Depression/Anxiety issues manifest more with regards to off-field interactions. LA was probably a pretty good town for that as you're less of a celebrity/big deal in a town full of famous people than you would be somewhere else.

Anyways, I think this deal is pretty easy to explain from all sides here. Arizona is more or less one ace and some smaller improvements away from being in contention and just signed a massive new Cable TV deal so they can afford it. Greinke gets to be the highest paid pitcher in MLB with a young and promising team.

It even makes some sense for the Dodgers to let him go. They've got a good rotation even without Greinke and have some very high value prospects to work in over the next few years.
