Grossman + Pronger's cap hit to Arizona

ByKevinAllen: Pronger's contract and Grossman traded from Philadelphia to Arizona for Sam Gagner a conditional draft pick.

FriedgeHNIC: Coyotes take Chris Pronger's contract for cap reasons. Big hit, small actual salary. BOS was considering something similar with Marc Savard.

FriedgeHNIC: Pronger cap hit $4.9M. Actual salary: $575,000. As @TGfireandice adds, could go into the Hall of Fame on Monday.

FriedgeHNIC: Also allows PHI some off-season flexibility. Pronger counts against their cap in the summer.

Yeah, so given that Pronger is overtly not trying to come back to play hockey, how is this remotely ok in the eyes of the league?

Precedent, I guess. I mean, Tim Thomas was a similar situation a couple years ago. He was de facto retired, but the league allowed his contract and cap hit to be traded to the Islanders.

I dunno, same goes for Horton. That puts to bed the ridiculous rumour of buying out Gagner. I kind of like it for Arizona.

It certainly throws a wrench into the "no team will be as bad as the Leafs" plan I had in my mind.  Arizona now has a current cap number of 40.2M and they need to sign a goalie, 2-3 defensemen, and 5-6 forwards and need to spend at least 12 million to get the cap floor.  Arizona might set a record this year.

I don't view them as similar situations.  Horton likely never plays a game again but he's actively trying to get better with the hopes of playing.  Pronger hasn't done a single thing over the last few years to try and play again.  I can't imagine the NHLPA is happy about this...certainly they won't be when Arizona doesn't put Pronger on LTIR.

Maybe, though I'd be willing to bet Chris is still following up his medical examinations and such. I don't see a ton of evidence for Horton either, just words in media. It's technicality chess moves to me, which is interesting at least and I don't see a lot of will to put a stop to it.

Actually, couldn't Pronger retire now?  I mean the reason he didn't was so the Flyers could put him on LTIR.  Arizona wants the cap hit, so could he retire and not have it matter?

Like I get that there's precedent and all, but given Pronger special situation I'm pretty surprised they let this one pass.

Why? A team's cap hit doesn't really matter to them. Players still get the same % of league revenue so Pronger counting for a certain cap hit but little in the way of actual dollars means everyone else probably gets a few bucks more.
