Canadiens Montr?al ‏@CanadiensMTL 2m
Canadiens have agreed to a 2-year deal with forward Daniel Bri?re

Tim Panaccio ‏@tpanotchCSN 5m
Briere will make more $$ in these 2 years w/MTL than his actual owed salary with the Flyers before the buyout. #cantbeatthat

I suspect Grabbo will experience the same thing

I doubt it. Briere was owed $3M and $2M for the final two seasons on his contract, which is what Panaccio is referring to. Grabovski was owed $6M, $6M, $5M and $4.5M. He won't get a contract that exceeds those amounts.

Grabbo doesn't have to get a contract that exceeds those amounts. All he has to get to be ahead is get a contract that exceeds 1/3 of those amounts - which he'll do handily. Because he's getting 2/3rds of those amounts already (although half is deferred).

As for Briere, according to Capgeek:

@kevin_mcgran Actually, now getting $9.6M over two, including buyout.

Briere was scheduled to be paid $3 mil this year and $2 mil next for a total of $5 mil. The Habs are paying him $4 mil per year for a total of $8 mil. He'll get roughly $1.675 from his buyout over the next two seasons for a total of $9.675 mil over the two years and he'll get another $1.675 in deferred buyout money. Instead of banking $5 mil, he's going to bank $11.35 total for these next two seasons ($1.675 deferred) - which is why some say he stuck to his NMC.

And he got a bunch of his money from the Flyers upfront in this deal (ie $10 mil in the first season of his $6.5 mil deal).

I think it's highly likely when the dust settles that Grabbo will be ahead of his $5.5 mil per year clip - unless someone claims him off waivers - unlikely but not impossible. I'd look at it if I were a GM in need of a 2nd line center because there are not many as good available and the over payment is roughly $1.5 mil per year - not a colossal sum for a commodity hard to come by - which is why he got such a deal in the first place.

Still if you add up his 2/3rds that he'll get for the buyout + the salary he signs for (say $3.5M) it's close to or at the original $5.5M he would have earned.

Good for Danny B., hope he does well with Montreal.  He was well liked by most fans in Philly, & did some positive things in the community.
