Real_ESPNLeBrun: Jeff Petry's new deal with Habs, $33 million over six years ($5.5 M AAV)

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Petry's deal also includes a no-trade clause

Defence prices are definitely on the up.

He's a good d-man and all but that's a  bit rich IMO. I'd say 4 was good value, 4.5 fair, 5 a bit high and 5.5 quite high. Especially for 6 years.

Dion looks pretty good if he turns it around even slightly.

He's their 2nd best defenceman, they had to bring him back. Contract isn't half bad either, it's pretty much the going rate for his level.

Other defencemen at $5.5mil: Orpik, Girardi, Carle, Wishniewski, Leddy, OEL, Myers. I'd take Petry over the first 4 definitely, and they're the ones who also signed their contracts as UFAs.

Yeah, that definitely just seems to be the going rate. It'll be interesting to see how Franson does in that market.

You really should try watching an occasional Coyotes game, OEL is a tier above Petry.

I'd be surprised he goes for less than $6M per. Could easily end up with $6.5M+ because of he's a RHD with good offensive skills - something Petry lacks.

He was, but he's also a 2nd pairing guy at best, really. That's a lot of money and years committed to a guy like that. I know it's around the market rate, but, the market is stupid.

Yup, I'd have Franson way before I'd have Petry.

If Franson doesn't get 6.5 from a team his agent should be fired.

Sorry read that exactly the opposite of what you wrote???

Hah no worries I could have made it more clear. The first 4 names that I mentioned are who I would take Petry over, and they're the more appropriate candidates as they also signed as UFAs. There's no point in comparing Petry's cap hit to OEL when OEL signed his deal as a 22-year old.

At least it's the Habs being stupid.

I don't know if it will be that easy. Franson's value dropped (or even plummeted) post-trade, while Petry's very much benefited from his trade to Montreal.

True. It'll be nice to hopefully not see the Leafs be stupid for a little while. It doesn't feel like they'll be in on the guys that are going to get stupid contracts.
