TSNBobMcKenzie: ARI sends Martin Hanzal, Ryan White and 2017 4th rder to MIN.

TSNBobMcKenzie: MIN sends 2017 1st rder, 2018 2nd rder, 2019 conditional 4th rder (conditions to follow) and minor leaguer Grayson Downing to ARI.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Conditional pick: If MIN wins one playoff round this year, it becomes 3rd round pick; if MIN wins two rounds, it becomes 2nd round pick.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Also, ARI retains 50 per cent of Hanzal's salary.

Ummm?

Hanzal is 30 years old.  He has a career high of 16 goals and 41 points.  He's chronically injured and misses on average around 25% of each year.

How is that worth multiple picks, including a 1st + 2nd + conditional 2nd/3rd/4th?

Trade Bozak indeed.

I'm not against the trading of Bozak and agree this makes it seem like the time to do it but if you step back for a second I don't know this really makes the case that it would be a great deal.

A late 1st in a draft scouts don't seem to like very much, a 2nd next year and a conditional pick probably adds up to prospect depth rather than anything super-exciting. At best maybe you add someone on the level of Kapanen only a couple years further away from contributing to the team.

Alright Mr. Fletcher, that's enough, step away from the phones please.

Yeah I don't get it.  Bozak has better numbers than Hanzal and is the same age.  Is there another GM out there willing to give up that much for Bozak?

The prices for rentals are quite silly attractive; are our higher end rental options viable in this deadline market though? I'm looking at teams with Cup aspirations and cap space but I'm having trouble finding a fit in terms of pieces. Expansion draft considerations for their remaining year also work against their perceived value.

Best options seem to be Nashville, Edmonton, Calgary, Columbus. I'm guessing Atlantic teams have to be off the table, but I'd be very interested in a Bozak/Sergachev or Juulsen move.

I hope we do make some creative transactions to take back a contract for picks but also free up contract slots in the process (something like JvR or Komarov + retained salary + 1 B- prospect + 2 older C prospects <--> 1-2 year salary dump + D prospect + 2017 1st + 2018 whatevers).

Hanzal's that prototypical big, shutdown centre though. Right or wrong GMs pay a premium for a guy with that type of reputation.

Yeah I suppose so, Hanzal is always gonna be 6'6" while Bozak is 6'0 with lifts on.

I don't know why Shane Doan bugs me the way he does but, like, dude for years and years and years you prioritized liking the weather over winning and now you're getting mad?

Doan was against a Coyotes move to Winnipeg because he didn't want to leave his ranch, and has also shot down any trade potential over the years citing the same reason.

Screw him.

I have to believe the Leafs will unload someone before Wednesday.  Seeing the price that Hanzal fetched, there has to be a market for one of JVR, Komarov or Bozak.

He's also just a general POS on the ice too. Screw Doan indeed.

Don't screw him that much, he's Matthews hero.

I actually thought that what Fletcher said was fairly honest. They're going for it and he pushed his chips in.

That said I'm not sure how you'd read that as a defense of what he gave up. Well, unless you're not very good at jokes and...

I think I've stumbled upon the problem.

In a weird twist, there was an extra part to this deal:

https://twitter.com/Russostrib/status/836301390318354432

Minnesota put Pulkkinen on waivers, and once he cleared, traded him to Phoenix - more than likely part of the original deal.

I'm curious as to the reasoning for this?  Would Phoenix be like "we don't particularly want him, but if no team is willing to take him on waivers, we'll take him then."

Doesn't picking him up via waivers force them to play him on the NHL roster?

I'm guessing it's more of a "we want to be able to send him down to our AHL team right away instead of having to put him on waivers ourselves - if he doesn't clear, you send us X instead."
