Pretty good contract for a guy coming off a Vezina nomination. Not to constantly bring up my "Lou wasn't our saviour" thoughts, but this to me is more evidence that Andersen's contract was, at best, just fine.

He also has a career .917 Sv Pct.  (Andersen's is .918)  Without a doubt, his game took a leap last season but how often do goalies have career years and then falter beyond that?  Especially in years where his team is lights out.

My exact thought, that?s a huge commitment with only one real year of results.

Especially considering his only other season as a starting goalie, he posted below average results. The Jets are banking a lot of money on him having hit upon something he hasn't shown an ability to repeat yet.

It's not as if Hellebuyck came completely out of nowhere though. He's been projected to be an above-average NHL starter since probably his D+1 season. The contract carries risk but you could say that about most long-term goalie contracts and most long-term RFA contracts. But coming off a year where he was named the 2nd best goalie in the league I think the Jets still did well here.

At the same time they're probably kicking themselves for not signing him to a longer term deal last summer when he signed just a 1-year deal for $2.25mil.
