I'm surprised they went with Hitch over Quenville, but that's just me.

Might not have exactly been their choice.

There were some videos over the weekend of Quenneville, uh, enjoying himself at a Bears game. Picking up and going from Chicago to Edmonton, like you say, might not be his first choice. Especially when he's getting paid handsomely to stay put.

McLellan wasn't even the (primary) problem.

Disagree. It's pretty clear that his not being from Edmonton really got in the way

I stand corrected.

Wyshynski makes the probably accurate point that this is Chiarelli's last option before probably getting fired himself if the Oilers don't make the playoffs.

He probably won't even be next in line for the chopping block. I think that honour will go to Mike Sullivan.

The other guy who I think is in trouble is Hakstol. Have to think Philly expected better than this.

Philly would be a good spot for Quenneville I think if that happens.

Love using the phrase "perfect situation" to describe a team that will likely miss the playoffs 2 seasons in a row with a generational player in his prime.

Wonder what they're paying Hitch to un-retire? I guess he's born in Edmonton so maybe he figures he can be a hometown hero if be brings the Oilers to the playoffs

I wonder if Edmonton thought they better lock Hitch down before someone else does?

I don't know if too many other teams could have pulled him out of retirement. Coaching a talent like McDavid is awfully appealing for a guy who has basically done everything but coach a healthy generational talent in their prime.

I think it's a desperate move by Cia before he gets the boot. Coaches like Hitch do get a lot out players early on. McLellan couldn't do it and the team needs a shakeup. One thing for sure, if they don't do a lot better, Cia will be gone.
Love that Overdrive is playing Paul Bearer music and talking like him when saying what Hitch will say to the players. It's priceless.

Yeah, and really Hitch would be one of few notable candidates that I can think of that would take on this kind of challenge.  If he fails, he retires again.  If he succeeds, he can write his own contract for another couple of years if he feels like it.  The mandate is clear.

Obvious to everyone that Chiarelli is done unless they have a decent showing, which I'd think at least one round of playoff success.
