Hurricanes sign Semin, 5 years 7M AAV

They're going to have a ton of money invested in their top two lines while maintaining a pretty lousy group of defensemen.

TSN is pondering whether or not Louis Eriksson may be available. He has 3 years left at 4.25 AAV,.... just saying.

Nieuwendyk would have 29 teams on hold right now if he was.

What could possibly go wrong with this Semin contract?  Wasn't there just some kind of minor issue with contracts and dollars and length?  Glad they got it all settled out!!

Forget about Kessel getting less than 7 long term.

Looking at their past 5 years their goals per game rate is identical (.43) and Semin has Kessel beat in points per game (.98 to .86). Yes, Kessel is younger, but they really are pretty identical players. They're offensive wingers whose only job is to score, and they do it well. Semin has some struggled a little these past couple of seasons but there's still a reasonable chance he could be a close to point-per-game winger throughout the deal. And that's what we expect of Kessel. So I'd say it's a pretty solid comparable. With Kessel's age the Leafs could even afford to tack on a few extra years, maybe all the way to 8, to get the cap hit down just below 7.

Yeah. The first thing I thought when I heard the news here was that Semin is almost the perfect comparable for Kessel.

I think there are some problems with that comparison though. There's Kessel's youth, his durability(less than half as many missed games than Semin over that stretch) and the fact that he's put up those numbers for the most part with significantly less talent around him in Toronto than Semin had in Washington.

But chiefly I think the problem isn't so much the players as it is the time frame. I think it's going to be very difficult to get an agent on board with the idea that a 25 year old player should sign his UFA contract with his stats from 4 or 5 years ago factored into the equation. When the Leafs deal with Kessel, they're going to be dealing with the guy who's scored at a near PPG pace over the last two years, not the 22 year old who scored 55 points with Blake and Stajan.

Semin is actually quite the proficient defensive player. Not a lot of people regard him as one though.
