Is Jared Cowen salvageable?

So much promise for this kid. Picked #8 overall in 2009. Basically a throw in on the Phaneuf deal.

Does anyone think there is a chance Cowen can find his game under Babcock?

This article would indicate that the chances are slim...

Before the end of this season? Absolutely not. By the end of next season? More than likely not. He's just, you know, not very good. His value is really entirely based around the cap credit available from buying him out.

Just expanding on something I brought up in the trade deadline thread . . .

With Cowen's biggest trade value point being the cap credit for buying him out, I suggested a deal with Chicago around Bickell and a pick - basically, taking on a one year cap dump from a team looking for cap space, to get a pick from that deal and possibly more if any value can be salvaged from the player coming the other way. I thought about it a little more last night, and came up with a few more teams that might be interested in such a deal that might also work for the Leafs:

Washington with Laich
Dallas with Hemsky
Detroit and Kindl
Montreal and Desharnais
Philly and Umberger

There's also a couple less appealing potential matches (cap hits higher than the Leafs would be happy taking on for the pick they'd get back) in Wideman and Wizniewski, and a few potential options who have two years left on their deal instead of one.

According to Sens redditors (that's two strikes right away), Cowen has great physical tools except he can't skate, and his hockey IQ leaves a lot to be desired. But he's pretty strong and can clear out the front of the net.

In today's league, and based on the way we need to play, the best thing for him to do is to not stray too far from the front of the net and just be really, really mean to anyone who gets too close.

I wouldn't be concerned if he couldn't skate if he were a baseball player, but for hockey it's pretty much a "nice to have"

So one thing to note is that injured players can't be bought out.  Ottawa radio found it interesting that back in September he claimed that he felt the best he had in years, and that after he was traded he started to mention that his hip was bothering him.

For the sake of clarity, they can't be bought out without them agreeing to it. That being said, I don't think too many people would choose to stay in a situation where they know they're basically not wanted.
