Islanders moving to Brooklyn, Hipsters not impressed

reporterchris: The Barclays Center holds 14,500 for hockey. Last time, #isles averaged more than that at Nassau Coliseum was 2002-03 (14,930).

Still feels like a weird decision. Yeah, maybe you make it up in terms of ticket prices like they do in Winnipeg but I would have thought the Isles could have filled a bigger place if it wasn't a barn and they weren't terribly mismanaged.

They needed to move out of Nassau, and, I guess this was their only real option without seriously looking at real relocation.

Eh, mazel tov to them I suppose. Still seems a bit rash.

I suppose they don't need to change their name technically but I guess that'll be an interesting wrinkle. There is also the big russian population there too so, you know, I guess it's a decent market.

They become the Brooklyn Islanders?

I was just saying, Brooklyn is still technically a part of Long Island so if they didn't want to change things they wouldn't have to. It'll be interesting to see if they re-brand.

In fairness, they've been lobbying for a new arena in the LI area for years now, and have received little to no support from corporate sponsors, the local government and the residents of the area. I'm not sure I'd categorize it as rash.

I think they should rename themselves the Nets to try to trick basketball fans into buying tickets.

Well, but that's all been tied into the bigger Lighthouse project. That's failed, sure, but that was a boondoggle on any number of levels and was rejected, I'm guessing, in part because Nassau and Suffolk saw what went on in Brooklyn with Atlantic Yards.

So you're right, their efforts haven't gone well, but I don't know if they've really exhausted the idea of building a new, more NHL-sized rink further out. Rash is probably the wrong word but I do wonder about the long term viability of the decision if they're selling a maximum 14,500 tickets a night.

Perhaps they don't need to. Maybe they could just incorporate Brooklyn somehow into they're existing logo. I might look at re-branding though.

Maybe the fisherman will be wearing skinny jeans and listening to Grizzly Bear.

Oh, I agree that this was probably a poor choice and very likely to end up being something that they regret, but, that's pretty much par for the course when you let the Wang make the decisions.

Oh I hope not.

So much opportunity to come up with a new name, I would think there'd be a better handle than that.

I'm hearing the arena was built specifically for basketball. - Horrible sight-lines for hockey some are saying. The good news is there is plenty of time to tweak things there a little.

We SHOULD have hockey back by then.

True, but I think they'll have to switch names.  Nobody but nobody in Bklyn considers themselves Long Island residents.

How about the Brooklyn Lodgers?
