6 years, $5.725mil cap hit. He still has one year remaining on his entry-level deal.

That's a lot of money for a guy who had a good rookie season and then took a small step back during his sophomore season. One of those 'overpaid not but worth it later' contracts. I'm sure Hall and Eberle are pretty happy to hear this.

My sentiments as well, CTB.  What was the incentive for Rutherford to "rush" into this contract?

I don't understand how the Owner's who cry about CBA still don't take advantage of the RFA rule by giving out huge contracts.  They are in complete control of the player at this point.

I agree. I don't think this is likely to turn out to be a bad contract, but, I also don't think it's going to a good value contract either.

It's pretty much in line with what these guys are getting these days. Hard to argue that this is a bad deal and the Grabo deal is a good one at the same time. - I'm not doing either BTW.

Nashville may beg to differ.

It is?  Grabovski was a pending UFA.  Seems like that's a stark contrast to Skinner's situation.

There have been about 3 offers to RFA's in last 7 or 8 years.  I will stick with my point about team being in control.  If Owner's really wanted to keep salaries down they would give no offer sheets to rfa's and own these players.

At first glance it seems like they overpaid a million or so, but also locked him up for 2 UFA years in the process. I can see why they would do 6 years @~5.7 vs 4 years @4.7. He's gonna be a hell of a player. It might not be until 2 seasons in (3 years from now) that he starts to really earn it, but in the latter half I expect he'll be more than earning his pay.

Well, there are three problems there. The first is that it would be collusion to simply decide among the owners not to make offers to another team's RFA. The second is that teams want to build good relationships with their players and retain their services past their RFA years and not playing the hardest of hardball with them as RFAs is a start. Thirdly you're saying that you don't understand why teams give big contracts to pending RFA's and then say that very few RFA's have been offer sheeted without connecting that those two things have something to do with each other.

Deals like this I can get behind because they're buying out his free agent years and you have to pay for that.

I'm not saying that makes it a good deal, but locking up a 20 year old with a .73PPG who plays hockey the way Skinner does - well, that could work out quite well.

Or at least, it's more defensible than the 13+ year deals we've been seeing.

I'd rather see the deal take him to a year before he's UFA and then go from there. Handing out a 6 year deal to a 20 year old seems to be a tad much. Especially a 20 year old who has already missed 16 games due to a concussion.
