Joey Crabb re-signs 1 Year Deal with Leafs

Sure, I mean, the team played so well last year why wouldn't you bring everyone back?

What is the NHL league minimum -- is it $750k?  I thought it was closer to $500k.  Nothing against Crabb but has he done anything to earn a contract above the minimum?

I think $525k is the minimum. The Leafs seem to overpay at the AHL level and arguably the NHL level on these two way deals to help buy them some depth. If Crabb gets called up for a few NHL games, he'll make a few more bucks than a team who signs him to the minimum.

Leafs gross reserve contract list is now at 50

Between Lombardi on LTIR and the two juniors, they have in theory a 3 spots left (2 if Olden is signed and plays for the Marlies).

Is he significantly worse then the other stiffs left on the market? But yeah, a solid "whatever" from me.

Yeah. I mean, what's left on the market is a bunch of guys that are hard to differentiate between and a bunch of guys who are at the tail end of their careers. For the role the Leafs want Crabb for, might as well go with the guy you know over the other guys out there who aren't necessarily better, just different.

Stll plenty of room foe Schenn + the next greatest player ever out of the NCAA  ;)

For clarification, my numbers included/assumed Schenn is on the list.

He was leading the Marlies in goals before the call-up, if I remember correctly. And the Marlies are a bit weak on the wing, especially when it comes to veterans. I have no problems with this signing. He won't earn a spot in training camp, and with our improved depth hopefully he won't even be the first guy to call-up when injuries hit.

I know you've mentioned this before, and it's always seemed very weird to me that players on LTIR wouldn't count as one of the 50 contracts. So I did a bit of googling and found this article on the Oilers website that explains the various roster limits teams must comply with; here's what it says about players on injured reserve:

From there teams are only allowed to have up to 50 players signed to contracts for any given season, including those for the players on the active roster and injured reserve lists.

It certainly wouldn't be surprising to see an article on a teams website misinterpret the CBA, but I haven't found any evidence suggesting that Lombardi wouldn't be counted on the reserve list. A quick scan of the CBA doesn't really saying anything about injured players specifically, but it does state that all players signed to a SPC (whether or not currently playing in the NHL) are included. It clearly states the exemption for 18/19-year old players returning to juniors, but says nothing about injured players. So I think it's safe to assume that Lombardi is going to take up one of the 50 spots regardless of if he plays a game or not.
