Buddy and I are debating this a little at work.

There's really not much separating the two's skill set.  Pretty similar players actually.

Who do you think is a better player and why?

I go with Toews due to the accomplishments, but it's pretty close and Giroux might change my mind by the end of these playoffs.

Tough one, if you look at what they've accomplished so far, one has a Cup and was a big reason why they won, the other doesn't yet, then you go with Toews.  If you said who's better *right now*, then i'd have to go with Giroux based on what he's done this past season and into the playoffs.  Can Giroux keep it up over the long haul?  Who knows...I'd take either one on my team though.

Even if Giroux carries his team to the cup I almost have to stick with Toews due to his rock solid play in the 2010 Olympics.  Crosby scored the 'golden goal' but I'm pretty sure we don't get that far without Toews.

When both guys are at their best I don't think there's a nickels worth of difference between them.

Toews, he's bigger and has more of a proven track record. Giroux is incredible though. The difference between the two is minute. If I could choose the player to start a team with, Toews would be top 5 and Giroux would be top 10.

At both WJC that he was part of, Toews was named to the post-tournament All-Star team. Same with the Olympics, and I don't think many would argue that he was the team's best forward.

Then in the NHL, he has a Cup and Conn Smythe. So he hasn't just won at every level...he's pretty much been the, or one of the, best players on all those championship teams.

He's also excellent defensively (4th and 3rd in Selke voting the last 2 years, respectively) and always among the leaders in faceoff %.

If I were starting a team right now, I would pick Toews over any other player in the NHL. (I doubt Crosby makes it to 1000 games)

I don't disagree with any of that but I'd be careful about saying that Toews gets the edge because of his team's accomplishments or things that happened in the past. The reason the Flyers haven't won a cup with Giroux can't possibly be put at Giroux feet and he's actually got better scoring numbers in the playoffs than Toews does(Toews is at 1.00 ppg, Giroux at  1.07)

And I think something does have to be said for what Giroux showed this year offensively. He played at a 99 point pace this year. The best Toews has put up in his career was this year at an 80 point pace. That's a not insignificant edge for Giroux.

Yeah, but Toews has more wins.  More.  :-*

I agree with you, you said everything that needed to be said.

For a sens fan, you're not bad you know.

Giroux has more offensive talent, but Toews is a more all around player...if I was building a team I'd probably have to take Toews

I'd be pretty happy with either one of them but if I had to choose I'd go with Toews as a hockey player, though the separation is practically a whisker on the whole.

Also, Giroux would be the better price performance for the next two years by quite a stretch.

I'd take Toews if I wanted a more well-rounded complete player.

Tough to ignore Giroux if one is seeking a more offensively-mInded forward.

Truth is, both players get the job done, with Toews having been there done, done that, more than Giroux.  Call it experience, skills & youth all rolled into one.
