June 1st signing deadline for 2010 prospects

The current CBA gives teams 2 years to sign non-NCAA prospects after they are drafted or they re-enter the draft. From the 2010 draft, the Leafs have signed Ross, McKegg, Granberg, and Carrick. Sondre Olden, Daniel Brodin, and Josh Nicholls have not yet signed contracts and it appears as though they'll be re-entering the draft.

If the Leafs re-sign all of their RFAs, they'll have 49 contracts on the books and the maximum allowed is 50. That's obviously what's preventing the team from offering those guys deals.

Both of the rules at play here seem to frustrate most teams. I wouldn't be surprised to see them tweaked a little bit in the next CBA.

Brodin's under contract to a team in Finland, so not a surprise there. Olden was a bit of a disappointment in the OHL, but I thought the Leafs might give him a contract just to hold on to his rights. Nicholls seems like AHL/ECHL filler, so, no surprise there either.

I doubt that the contract limit is stopping the Leafs from signing these guys. If they are deemed worth a contract, they'll be signed and other things can be sorted out. I believe Nichols is still a possibility. I don't think Nichols not signing has to do with MLSE thinking that he doesn't warrant a pro contract. I think it's about the terms of the entry level deal. Olden not signing is because he wasn't very good in the OHL this season. Too bad, he has good raw abilities but something's obviously missing. As for Brodin, SEL 4th liners are hardly what the Leafs need to add.
