JVR

At what point do we seriously consider trading JVR?  He's one of the few assets that we have that still has value and I fear with the way the Leafs are struggling to score, his value is just going to decrease.

By the time the Leafs are competitive once again, he'll most likely be at or well into his 30's and likely will bolt at the end of his deal in 3 years (unless we either overpay or this rebuild thing receives a serious boost in the next year).  He's got term on his current deal but at a very manageable number capwise so he should attract a lot of interest should he be made available.

It may be best for both sides to send him to a more competitive team while the Leafs get picks or prospects back.

I imagine the price on JvR right now is pretty high. He's still young and on a pretty good contract still. If the Leafs put him out to the open market, there'd be enough teams interested to create something of a bidding war. I don't think they've done that yet. I'm sure they're open to moving him, they're just haven't put him on the block yet.

And, while the Leafs may be struggling to score, he's still on a 30+ goal pace. GMs around the league are smart enough to be able to separate individual performance from team performance when a player has a track record of contributing. A couple months on a poor offensive team isn't going to impact JvR's value in any substantial way if he keeps scoring at a reasonable pace. Even if he drops into the 25 goal range, most GMs will interpret that as being capable of 30+ with more talent around him.

There's no need to rush players off the roster. Their values don't fluctuate the way fans often think they do. Better to wait to find the right trade.

Just no one willing to pony up the assets we've requested yet. I expect him to be gone at the deadline to a contender looking to shore up their wing production for a playoff run.

JvR has a modified No-Trade Clause kicking in for 2016-17 and 17-18.

Good catch with the NTC clause that kicks in after this season.  With that in mind I would expect him gone by this years deadline as well.

Yeah I think the deadline is the time to wait for. Even if his numbers are down this year I suspect most GMs will have the sense to realise why and at the deadline he could be one of the better pieces available for a team looking some scoring.
