Kyle Wellwood Retires

According to Swiss newspapers he has retired stating that his heart is no longer in it. Too bad if he would have had the drive of someone like Gilmour he would have been an incredible player. As it is he was just a good player (at times)...

I remember years ago when he was still a Leaf, reading that he was a book worm and never into hockey really and was forced to play as a child by his parents, he had such incredible talent, if only the drive was there to play.

Via his agent, Kyle Wellwood had 1-month deal w/Zug, which expired. Returning to NA to explore NHL opportunities. If none, then he'll retire

Wellwood's an interesting case. Once it became clear he couldn't hack it as a top-6 forward he did make the adjustment to 3rd liner a lot better than players before him have. I think his play particularly on Vancouver and San Jose was good but both teams eventually parted ways with him to bring on more size to their bottom-6. Then he went to Winnipeg where they played in as a top-6 forward again and he actually set a career high in points there 2 seasons ago.

I'm sure it won't happen, but if he's looking for NHL opportunities I wouldn't mind giving him a league minimum contract for a season. Having him around as a 13th forward and play him on the 2nd or 3rd lines when injuries strike (like they have now).

I liked Wellwood, came up in the same class as Ian White and I remember them playing in the junior world championships.

But as I am a hopeless comedian I have to point out: that he is retiring to open up a chain of Burger Joints...Welly Burgers

If his heart's not in it, his heart's not in it. I always liked him as a player and really think that it's a shame that him being a thoughtful, well-rounded and conflicted person was synthesized and boiled down to "HE DOESN'T HAVE THE DRIVE OR HOCKEY LOVE HE NEEDS!" by the talk radio crowd.

Memories  ;D

Must of been hell after signing with EV Zug just to find they only have one kind of cheese they put on their burgers in Switzerland.
