A game between two of the worst teams in the NHL or a game between two of the best teams in MLB? Hmmm . . .

Well, that's just nitpicking now isn't it?

I hope Komarov destroys Clarkson tonight.

If Komarov doesn't knock Bobrovsky's water bottle out of his net with Clarkson standing nearby this entire season will be a colossal failure.

No offense to Leo, but any team with Komarov on the top line won't be winning a lot of games. The goaltending start tonight is interesting. You can certainly argue Reimer had a good start in his last game and has earned the start tonight (he didn't let in the first shot either), but certainly coaching/management knows what the numbers (below) are, and they're playing a back-to-back. So why Reimer tonight?

BTW, I have Clarkson with the game winner tonight. And then a Clarkson stick flip, with the subsequent butterfly effect taking out some important Columbus landmark.

In other news:

Per Siegel - Career splits:
Bernier: 0-3-2, .903, 3.55 vs. PIT; 4-2-0, .923, 2.08 vs. CBJ
Reimer: 0-3-0, .838, 5.40 vs. CBJ; 4-0-2, .931, 2.27 vs. PIT

Naturally, Reimer will start tomorrow vs CBJ and Bernier will start Saturday vs PIT. #tanknation

Does anyone think those splits are genuinely meaningful? Like, they actually represent something about how those goalies or teams play that leads to such drastically different results? Has James Reimer figured out a way to stop the Penguins he can't apply to the Blue Jackets?

I'd think one of the nice things about having a data-driven approach to things is that you'd tend to ignore sample sizes like that.

I don't think they're particularly meaningful, but in a glum season that's only 3 games old there isn't much to do other than speculate and have some fun with it.

Babcock said this morning in his press interview (I didn't hear the question) that it's too small a sample to decide if this goalie plays better against this team, or that goalie plays better against that team. And he's right, except given it's a back-to-back, and each goalie will play one game, what else does he have to go on?

Well, it's not just that the sample sizes are short, it's that they contain entirely meaningless information. For instance, part of Bernier's strong numbers against Columbus is a start he made for the Kings in March of 2011 against a Columbus team that's experienced almost total roster turnover since then(Fyodor Tyutin and Jared Boll being the only guys still on the team). So even if we do buy that some goalies stylistically play better against certain teams, the team Bernier will be facing will have a new coach and almost entirely new players.

So honestly, I think just about anything else is better to go on. Go based on who's looked better in practice. Use this as an attempt to motivate Bernier. Like you say, reward Reimer for how well he's played comparatively.

Heck, even giving Reimer the start so he can have the opportunity to look better against Columbus and not have him think that it's a team he can't beat has more merit than numbers that actively mean nothing.
