Leafs Cap situation

digdug

New member
So if I plug in the guaranteed guys into our roster
and leave Hyman and Dermott on regular IR  then
I can't get under the cap  with 20 players....

But as far as I understand it both Hyman
and Dermott are out long enough that they
could be put on LTIR  .....

Then maybe the Leafs could carry 22 guys?

Is this what we expect them to do?

If not how will the Leafs be cap compliant?

PPP had a good breakdown of the cap situation that was posted elsewhere already. Check it out here: https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2019/9/14/20865628/toronto-maple-leafs-roster-maple-leafs-lines-maple-leafs-cap-space-mitch-marner-contract-cap-squeeze

So you don't have to dig for it, the conversation was on this thread: https://www.tmlfans.ca/community/index.php?topic=5456.msg372235#msg372235

That being said, looking beyond this season:
https://twitter.com/ryanfancey/status/1173588598039437312

Winger spares are easy to get through UFA, and Marlies call ups, and overseas signings, and waivers. The primary focus will be filling out the top of the defense unless Liljegren or whoever grabs it before then (Barrie/Pietrangelo/etc).

With Hyman & Dermott due back soon,  the Leafs need to be cap compliant again.  They have several options in terms of a few expendable players.

Here is a sample roster:

I don't see Spezza and Shore getting sent down like they have in their example.
They for sure keep the C's vs Timashov.

I do think that the Leafs are going to be pretty nervous about Timashov potentially clearing waivers though. I almost wonder if they would have been better off placing him on waivers at the end of training camp. The odds of him clearing would have been better then.

Is Petan already down? If not ship him down

The Leafs will need to cut 4 players from their current roster soon. One when Dermott returns and 3 when Hyman returns.

Petan and Gravel are the two easy ones, as they've both cleared waivers already and can go straight back down. After that 2 of: Timashov, Shore, Spezza, Marincin, Holl will need to be placed on waivers. It's likely Marincin and Holl are both safe as one will be the 6D and the team will probably want to carry a 7th defenceman as well. So that leaves only 1 spot on the roster for Timashov, Shore, Spezza.

Timashov is probably the biggest risk for being poached by another team, but he's not a center ... I think they keep him and get rid of the other two.  I think it is unlikely that another team takes a flyer on Spezza.  If they do, will he report?

If Tavares is still injured, he's gonna be the "spare".  So we'd have 12 and 6 healthy....

Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Hyman - Kerfoot - Marner
Mikheyev - Spezza - Kapanen
Moore - Goat - Shore

Muzzin - Barrie
Rielly - Ceci
Dermott - Holl

Timashov goes down unless you are willing to demote either Shore or Spezza- which is hard to do when JT (another C) is out.  Both Marincin and Gravel go down.

They could also just dress 11 forwards and 7 defencemen for a little bit. Depends on if they want to risk Marincin on waivers just so they can send him down for a week or so. Maybe they do, maybe they don't.

They'll also likely wait to see if they can get a better idea when Tavares is doing to return. He's been out for about a week. If they feel like he can return in another week I guess they delay Hyman's return until then. If they think he'll be out for longer than that then maybe they consider LTIR for Tavares.

1.  I doubt they go 11 and 7 to not waive Marincin.
2.  Yes, I can see them holding up Hyman's return to coincide with JT's to avoid choosing Spezza or Shore over Timashov
3.  Unfortunately LTIR is not retroactive.  So if they wait 2 weeks, find out JT needs a bit more time, he's gotta sit 10 games or 24 days from the day they put him on LTIR.  Only IR is retroactive.

Assuming, when everyone is finally healthy, the Leafs decide to run a 12F/7D roster then there will probably be a few instances throughout the season where they have to dress 11 forwards and 7 defencemen. I don't think it's something they would shy away from right now.

Believe it is: CBA 50.10.d.vi

Hey Siri, show me the Leafs cap situation after trading Cody Ceci to Anaheim.

Ugh... that would have totally been doable:
