Leafs name Peter Horachek and Steve Spott assistant coaches.

As Mirtle points out on the Globe site, Horachek was assistant to Barry Trotz in Nashville for years and ran their defence there.  Likely will take over that role with the Leafs.

I don't mind these moves.  They bring in an outside guy with defensive acumen, and a guy with intimate knowledge of the Marlies.  I think this bodes well for some of the AHL guys in terms of getting a significant look and maybe having a chance to succeed.  I, for one, would be interested to see what Ashton can do with more than 2 or 3 minutes of ice time.

I do sort of like the idea that they're establishing a coaching hierarchy where being a NHL assistant is seen as a bigger or more important job than the Marlies head coach.

And line mates that aren't McClement and Orr.

We may (should) actually see that happen, given that Shanahan has stated on the record that fighting doesn't really have a place in hockey anymore.

Well, we definitely won't see McClement. As for Orr, I'll believe it when I see it. What Shanahan says and what Carlyle ends up doing could very well be very different things.

After decades of disappointment, I fully expect to see Orr in the lineup opening night. But part of me - the part that always answers 'the Leafs' when my wife inevitably asks who's going to win the cup this year - holds hope that things will be different this time.  *sigh*  :-\

I like these additions, great news. And King will rightfullly step up to his place as head coach of the Marlies?all good news.

The thing is, I don't see Carlyle being the only coach to dress a goon.  So I wouldn't hesitate to dress Orr in reply.  But if they don't, I wouldn't either.

If the other team wants to waste a spot in their lineup on a goon, let them. There's no need to dress one in response. Teams did it to the Leafs on a regular basis this past season, and it made Orr even more useless than usual. Let the other team play with 11 useful forwards and their goon riding the pine because there's no one on the Leafs who's going to fight him.

Exactly.

So, essentially just be reactive instead of proactive? Why not choose to not ice a goon and let the other team respond. Or, why not just put out your best lineup every night?
